Apple Reportedly Halts Additional iPhone XR Production
Apple cancels iPhone Xr production boost
08 November, 2018, 04:16
It seems that Apple has realised that the demand of the newly launched iPhone XR is not up to the mark.
Apple has told its top smartphone assemblers-Foxconn and Pegatron-"to halt plans for additional production lines dedicated to the new iPhone XR".
In a unusual plot twist, Nikkei went on to cite Apple's decision to shift its focus towards "requesting more of the older iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models", which are about 20% cheaper than the iPhone XR ($599 vs. $749 base price). In any case, we now know that the company will stop giving iPhone sale reports, but the reasons are not clear.
A smaller third assembler, Wistron, originally tapped to be on standby for rush demands, will also reportedly not receive rush orders this season.
On Tuesday, shares in other Taiwan-based Apple suppliers fell sharply as well.
According to Nikkei, this means that Foxconn will be producing almost 100,000 units less every day based on the new estimates available. At Foxconn, only 45 production lines of the planned 60 are now being used.
In 2016, Apple introduced a cheaper iPhone called the SE, at a starting price of $399, but failed to lure more customers to buy that product.
Apple shares fell almost 4 per cent on Monday after the report from the Nikkei financial daily, which fuelled concerns that the iPhone XR - the cheapest of three iPhones unveiled in September - was facing weak demand just days after it hit shelves. In the quarter the American vendor released the ipHone XS, XS Max and XR.
Apple itself doesn't publish precise sales figures for the various models, but the message from suppliers is clear: the iPhone XR isn't selling as well as expected.
This information may help explain why Apple provided a dim forecast for iPhone sales in the current quarter.
Indeed, it was widely hailed as the unexpected hit of Apple's 2018 iPhone event. Other reason might be that Apple doesn't want investors and customers to keep on waiting for another successful 2015 when the company reached 231.22 million units sold.
