Schmeichel: Memory of Leicester owner's helicopter crash will stay with me

Kasper Schmeichel Under Srivaddhanaprabha's ownership Leicester won the 2015/16 Premier League title

The Leicester fans sang Vichai's name for the rest of a highly charged afternoon and, at the final whistle, the visiting players came together to embrace.

Jamie Vardy has called this week the "hardest of his life" and says the Leicester players are desperate to make the late Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha proud by delivering on the pitch.

The Foxes won 1-0 at Cardiff on Saturday on a hugely emotional occasion, as tributes were paid to Srivaddhanaprabha and the four others killed in a helicopter crash at the King Power Stadium a week earlier.

The Dane, 32, reportedly ran towards Vichai's helicopter after it crashed into a vehicle park killing him and four others on board.

He said: "I was on the pitch and I waved him off".

"I think you can see from the reaction of people what he meant to everybody".

"It is something that will stay with me, unfortunately". It's not a nice memory but I've had all the support that I need.

Chants of "Champions of England, you made us sing that", were also sung with gusto as supporters heralded the man that delivered unto them the most unlikely of Premier League titles.

The goalkeeper, who had the Thai national flag on his gloves, then joined his teammates and backroom staff around the centre circle to pay tribute to Vichai and the other victims.

"It was tough", Schmeichel said. "Our chairman wanted to do a tribute from Vincent (Tan, Cardiff's owner) and everyone at the club, we'll be having the minute's silence together, the chairman is going to lay a wreath and there will be moments to reflect for everyone", Warnock said.

"It's been a odd week, surreal really, and I'm glad it's out of the way if I'm honest", manager Neil Warnock said. "There are a lot of exhausted people in there now but I am proud of this team and the club, the way everyone has handled themselves has been unbelievable". Everyone wanted to chip in.

Speaking for the first time since the club's billionaire owner died in a helicopter crash the striker said the past week has been the "hardest" of his life.

"When he took over this club it was in a pretty precarious situation, and to build what he has is quite unbelievable", he said. "Whether it be player, staff, stadium staff, security - whatever it may be - everyone is equal and part of the family".
