The heated and hotly contested campaign that could see the first African-American elected governor of Georgia has been targeted by a white supremacist group, which sent recorded racist messages out to voters in the state.

According to the office of Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, an investigation has been opened that will look into Georgia's Democratic Party after a failed hacking attempt on the state's voter registration system.

Stamos said he believed Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department specialists would be better positioned to investigate any hack. The "scurrilous claims are 100 percent false", Georgia Democrats said, accusing Kemp of showing "another example of abuse of power".

Other Georgia Democrats called the investigation a "political stunt".

Citing a potential for conflict of interest, Democrats, including former President Jimmy Carter, have unsuccessfully asked Kemp to step aside as secretary of state until after the election.

The suit included allegations that the voter registration system was discriminatory, citing the cancellation of around 34,000 people's registration status between 2010 and 2013. "You can download personally identifiable information".

Kemp said the calls were "vile" but on Monday Abrams criticized his response.

"They seem to be doing it backwards", Richard DeMillo, a Georgia Tech professor and one of the experts contacted by Georgia Democrats, told CNN on Monday. Over the weekend, voting security experts informed Kemp that the voting system is susceptible to hacking, and Kemp quickly called on the FBI to investigate Democrats for "cybercrimes" trying to hack his state's elections.

"We are working with our private sector vendors and investigators to review data logs", said Candice Broce, spokeswoman for the Secretary of State's Office. "A criminal investigation will be conducted by the GBI's Georgia Cyber Crime Center". The Department of Homeland Security said Sunday that the State of Georgia had notified the department about the issue but declined to comment further. A survey a year ago by the security firm Carbon Black reported that one in four people said they would skip future elections based on worries their votes could be compromised.

Kemp's office blamed that breach on Kennesaw State University, which managed the system on Kemp's behalf. Kemp's insistence that he can do his day job while also running for governor has had an undeniably toxic effect on the integrity of the vote in Georgia.

"Kemp tried to play that Trump card to get where he's at", she said, adding that Abrams, by contrast, highlighted unity. This was a 4th quarter Hail Mary pass that was intercepted in the end zone. He now serves as the secretary of state, putting him in charge of the state's elections and creating an obvious conflict of interest.
