It added 15 criminal counts total, including new hate-crime charges pertaining to the wounding of two worshippers and the use of risky weapons against a dozen police officers, including the four injured in a gunfight with the suspect.

Mr Bowers, 46, who appeared defiant and determined in court, was dressed in a red jumpsuit and with a bandaged left arm.

He was flanked by two USA marshals as he entered a federal courtroom Thursday wearing red prison scrubs, a bandage on his left arm and shackles on his hands and feet.

The case against Bowers will be prosecuted first in federal court, with the US Justice Department saying it was in the national interest to protect freedom of religion, which is guaranteed under the US Constitution.

Bowers is accused of bursting into the synagogue and opening fire with a semi-automatic rifle and three pistols in the midst of Sabbath prayer services as he shouted, "All Jews must die".

Bowers was injured during a shootout with police during the massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue in what is believed to be the worst anti-Semitic attack in United States history.

Suspect Richard Bowers, who was wounded during the shooting, appeared briefly in court Monday in a wheelchair.

A team of rabbis and volunteers has gone into the Tree of Life synagogue to gather up blood and other remains from the victims of the shooting rampage, in keeping with Jewish law that says the entire body must be buried. The brothers were killed in the mass shooting last week at the Tree of Life synagogue.

Several thousand protesters demonstrated in the streets during Trump's visit, contending that his rhetoric helped fuel the gunman's anti-Semitism and anti-immigrant views against a Jewish group that aids refugees arriving in the US from overseas.

In addition to the 11 people who were killed on Saturday, two congregants were critically injured.

Trump, shrugging off protests that he was unwelcome in the city, made a brief, low-key visit to Pittsburgh on Tuesday to pay condolences as funerals were held for the first four victims laid to rest. "Saturday was the most lonely day of my life". He remains jailed without bail.

A private funeral was also conducted for Daniel Stein, the 71-year-old men's club president at Tree of Life.

Their daughter, Michelle Simon Weis, said she enjoyed going with her mother to Costco, where Bernice, 84, make sure to try the food samples.
