Khashoggi's body was 'dissolved' after murder: Erdogan adviser

A stream of reports in Turkey's pro-government media -- often sourcing anonymous Turkish officials -- have laid out a number of theories about the murder and its aftermath.

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt also said it was an appalling act, adding that it had "possibly" given the U.S. and the UK a chance to put new pressure on Saudi Arabia over other issues.

But increased tension between Tehran and Riyadh has fuelled speculation that shared interests may push Saudi Arabia and Israel to work together against what they regard as a common Iranian threat.

Instead, it said, the Saudis on Wednesday invited the Turkish prosecutor and his delegation to Saudi Arabia jointly to question the suspects held there about what happened to Khashoggi's body and whether his death was premeditated. "It would affect the entire region".

Germany and Switzerland have vowed to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia until the case is clarified.

Saudi Arabia has arrested 18 men on suspicion of killing Mr Khashoggi but denied that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered his death or had any involvement in it.

Prince Mohammed also reportedly urged the White House to preserve the US-Saudi alliance. "The president said we will demand accountability for those who were involved in the commission of this heinous crime".

Mr Khashoggi's family vehemently denied that he was in any way unsafe or a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Some claimed the body was wrapped up in a rug to be transported from the scene, while others said the hit squad carried the dismembered corpse away in several bags.

US State Department spokesman Robert Palladino on Thursday called for Khashoggi's remains to be located and returned to his family for burial as soon as possible. "To claim otherwise would be ridiculous".

Omer Chelik stressed that Turkey will not let anyone cover up Jamal Khashoggi's killing.

However the Saudi chief prosecutor, who visited Istanbul this week, said Saudi authorities had made no such statement about local collaborators, according to the Istanbul prosecutor's office.

"According to the latest information we have, the reason they cut up the body is it was easier to dissolve it", said Aktay, an adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who was close to Khashoggi.

He entered the consulate to sort out documents for his marriage to his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. A critic of the Saudi royal family, Khashoggi had been living in exile in the United States.
