The New Jersey Department of Health said in a news release that "another medically fragile child" who had a confirmed case of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation died Saturday night.

An eighth child has died at a New Jersey rehabilitation center where 23 people have been infected in a deadly viral outbreak, state health officials said on Friday.

The department confirmed 25 pediatric cases have been associated with the outbreak. A staff member also became ill, and there have been eight pediatric deaths.

The ninth child became ill before October 22 and died on October 28, the New Jersey Department of Health said.

Adenoviruses frequently cause mild to severe illness with cold-like symptoms, particularly in young children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is assisting with the outbreak at the facility, and the Department of Health Communicable Disease Service is on site as well. Some strains also cause diarrhea and pinkeye.

"This is a tragic situation, and our thoughts are with the families who are grieving right now", Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal said. And for most patients, only home remedies and over-the-counter medicines to relieve symptoms are needed.

The Health Department says an inspection team found "minor handwashing deficiencies", and they continue to work closely with the nursing and rehab center on infection control issues.

In a statement, the facility said it "promptly notified all appropriate government agencies when the virus was initially identified".

In rare cases among people with weakened immune systems, the viruses may cause pneumonia or inflammation of the brain and the tissues around it.

Hospitals in more than 30 countries around the world are detaining patients who can't pay their bills, according to an investigation by the Associated Press.

The viruses typically spread from close personal contact such as touching or shaking hands, through the air by coughing and sneezing, and touching objects or surfaces that have the viruses on them before touching one's mouth, nose, or eyes.

"People know patients are being held prisoner, but they probably think they have bigger battles in public health to fight, so they just have to let this go", Sophie Harman, a global health expert at Queen Mary University of London, said.
