McLaren Speedtail Pumps 1035HP And 250MPH Top End As Rightful Heir To Legendary McLaren F1

More than 100 buyers have plunked down close to $2.25 million for McLaren Automotive's first hyper-GT, the McLaren Speedtail, ahead of its public reveal on Friday.
There are several other sentences ending in "McLarenever" to consider, too. McLaren even sourced lightweight leather.
Due to the seating layout, as well as high-definition digital cameras in lieu of door mirrors - features that do not comply with US safety regulations - a McLaren spokesman said each Speedtail will have to be imported individually under a "Show or Display" rule that limits driving on public roads to no more than 2,500 miles (4,023 km) annually.
The front wheels are covered in aerodynamic shields that stay still as the wheels spin.
If that's not space-age enough for you, McLaren plundered another bright idea straight from NASA itself. And the driver's seat is located in the middle and two passenger sides behind the driver.
McLaren’s $2.25 million Speedtail hybrid boasts 250MPH speeds
At the core of the Speedtail is a carbon fiber monocoque structure, with carbon fiber also used for the body.
Highlight of the bodywork is the patented active rear ailerons that operate without the need of a shutline. In conjunction with the diffuser, they actively adjust to move the centre of pressure, providing the Speedtail with downforce precisely where it is needed. The Speedtail is 50mm longer in the wheelbase than a 720S and the bulkheads have been adjusted for the new layout at the front, and to cradle an all-new high density battery at the back.
The Speedtail packs a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine bolstered by an electric motor, which boosts power up to a remarkable 1,036bhp. It's also quite a bit faster than the last Ultimate Series monster, the McLaren P1, which could cover 0-300km/h in 16.5 seconds. The suspension is mostly aluminum and further weight has been saved by utilizing carbon-ceramic brake rotors instead of steel units. Only a handful of road cars have since surpassed the F1's 240mph top speed. That said, a third of the run was sold to American customers, meaning those that bring the vehicle here will need to apply for a show and display exemption. But what really made it unique was its three-across seating arrangement, with the driver placed in the center. Top speed is 250 miles per hour - exceeding the F1's 243 miles per hour. The number is significant: that's how many F1s were sold.
Limited to just 106 examples to preserve exclusivity, the price of the Speedtail will start from £1.75 million, plus taxes - but an extensive options list and limitless scope for personalisation should mean nearly every vehicle breaks the £2 million barrier.
