Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi may have been murdered over a report he was preparing on the use of chemical weapons in Riyadh's devastating military campaign in Yemen.

Ms Cengiz said she believes the Saudi regime knows where her late fiance's body is and that she wants the role of the "political leadership in this brutal killing to be brought to light".

"Cengiz said she and the Turkish nation want all of those responsible including those who gave the order to those who carried it out, from the bottom to the top to be tried and to receive the necessary punishments according to worldwide law".

"This incident, this assassination, took place in the Saudi consulate", she said, speaking through a translator.

Khashoggi, 59, entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain paperwork necessary for his upcoming marriage to Cengiz, a Turkish national.

The death of Mr. Khashoggi - a Washington Post columnist and a critic of Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - sparked global outrage and pitched the world's top oil exporter into crisis.

Saudi authorities have arrested 18 men over the murder, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has requested the suspects be extradited for trial in Turkey. "We agreed that when we have more clarity. we will try to find a unified European solution or reaction from all member states of the European Union", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, referring to the sale of arms to the kingdom.

The foreign minister also did not directly respond to questions about how the kingdom would persuade its allies that Crown Prince Mohammed had no ties to the killing.

Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, who spoke at the conference earlier in the day, promised the United States would seek to hold accountable those responsible for the death, though he did not mention Saudi Arabia by name. I want justice to be served. "That's an appropriate response while we continue to investigate and learn more about who in the Saudi government is responsible".

She said the West is considered a stronghold of human rights and democracy so it should stand up to the killers of her husband-to-be.

A Turkish academic who became engaged to marry Khashoggi four months ago, Cengiz was left waiting for her fiancee outside the consulate where he was murdered by what she branded a "death squad".

She also said she has not been approached by the Saudi royal family or been offered condolences.

He continued to say that Saudi Arabia must reform and "do penance for this appalling crime", partially "to ensure the substantial British interests engaged with Saudi Arabia are not toxified entirely by association with a slide into terror".

She said the murder had revealed the crown prince "not only to be a reckless, sadistic murderer. but an unreliable and treacherous ally".

"We discussed it. You know the same thing we talked about, the need for transparency, full and complete investigation", Mattis told a small group of reporters traveling to Prague with him.

"I found myself in a darkness I can not express", she said on Friday.
