Trump, the daily said, uses an iPhone to make calls to his friends.

China's foreign ministry has denounced as "fake news" a USA newspaper report that China is listening to President Donald Trump's phone calls, and has suggested he change his iPhone for a Huawei.

Mr Trump called The Times report incorrect and dismissed it as "long and boring". "Story is soooo wrong!" The Times story said that American intelligence reports suggested this was the case.

The Times reported that China, in particular, has listened to the president's phone calls and have tried to use the information they hear to try and influence the president by lobbying people he speaks with.

She then offered a pointed pitch for Huawei Technologies, the Chinese phone maker which has been shunned by the U.S. government over security concerns.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying set out to mock the NYT report on Thursday and dismiss all charges that say Chinese electronics are not secure. "I just assumed that anything he said was being listened to by a friend, a frenemy or all of the above".

Those very same protocol flaws have been used in the past by USA intelligence agencies to spy on foreign officials, such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to documents leaked by Edward Snowden -hence, the reason why White House security protocols view landlines as more secure systems.

"Except that I rarely use a cellphone, & when I do it's government authorised". He has refused to give this up, despite repeated requests by his officials, who have been asking him to make more use of the secure land lines.

President Donald Trump has criticized a report by the New York Times about the use of his personal cellphone.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said that the article "presented inaccurate information about the President's cellphone". "This phone security follows industry best practices and is closely managed under government supervision in conjunction with recommendations from industry partners".

The New York Times quoted "several current and former officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity so they could discuss classified intelligence and sensitive security arrangements". "Seeing this report, I feel there are those in America who are working all-out to win the Oscar for best screenplay". Mr Trump wrote on Twitter. "He ALWAYS used his personal iPhone in WH for calls even after being told over and over again about the security risk".

Trump repeatedly excoriated his Democratic rival in the 2016 presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton, on the issue of secure communications, rebuking her for her use of a private email address and server while she was secretary of state.

"This is a big problem, if true", Sen.

Multiple West Wing officials said that the head of Oval Office Operations, Jordan Karem, has told colleagues that he reviews the logs of the president's landline calls through the switchboard each morning and fills in the chief of staff, John Kelly. "The intelligence community works hard to defend us against foreign espionage". "While the president might legally be entitled to declassify whatever he wants, his decision to do so at the expense of our national security is a breach of his oath of office and the quintessential abuse of power for which impeachment is the only remedy".
