CBI vs CBI: Odisha Congress joins nationwide protests against Centre

Nageswara Rao, a 1986 batch Odisha-cadre IPS officer, took charge as interim chief of CBI around 2 am on Tuesday night following a government order giving him Alok Verma's powers. The CBI director gets a fixed two-year term; Verma was set to retire in January next year.

State Congress leaders led demonstrations in their regions against what the Congress described as the "illegal, unconstitutional and illegitimate removal of the CBI director by the Modi-Shah duo".

The matter is being heard by a Bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and KM Joseph. The CVC has also said that for the time being, no monitoring by anyone else should be allowed.

He also referred to the CVC and Centre's orders divesting Verma of his duties.

The CVC took an overnight decision to divest me completely of the CBI director's role.

The fact that the bench also felt the need to restrict what Nageshwar Rao (who has taken over the functions of the CBI Director in the interim) could do, could also be viewed as a rap on the knuckles of the Centre, who appointed him.

The feud between the CBI's top two - Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana - escalated with each accusing the other of corruption.

"This has been done as an interim measure and will subsist till the CVC concludes its inquiry into all issues which have given rise to the present extra-ordinary and unprecedented situation and till the CVC and/or Government of India takes an appropriate decision in accordance with the law as regards the measures to be adopted as a effect thereof", the statement said.

On Thursday, advocate, Prashant Bhushan challenged the decision of the government to send, CBI Director, Alok Verma on leave.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the midnight surgical strike on the CBI director took place because he was going to initiate investigation into the Rafale deal.

While Gandhi led hundreds of Congress workers and leaders on their protest march here, he was also joined by leaders from some other opposition parties as well, including from the CPI, Trinamool Congress and Loktantrik Janata Dal.

The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Central Vigilance Commission to complete its inquiry into allegations against Central Bureau of Investigation Director Alok Verma within two weeks, PTI reported.

The court was hearing Verma's plea against the Centre's decision to send him on leave. Asthana, it was said, has close links with the top officials of the prime minister's office and was handling important cases against the opposition leaders.
