Trump, in excerpts released Saturday from an interview to be aired Sunday on CBS's 60 Minutes show, warned there would be "severe punishment" for Saudi Arabia if it is determined that Khashoggi was murdered inside the Saudi consulate. "The Saudi economy has vital and influential roles for the global economy".

Khashoggi, who wrote for The Washington Post, is feared being killed by Saudi officials inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, where he was last seen entering.

Khashoggi, a critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the Saudi royal family, was last seen on October 2 when he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to get documents for his forthcoming marriage.

On Sunday, Saudis stock exchange dropped by as much as 7% at one point before recovering some losses. Turkish officials told journalists they believe Khashoggi was murdered inside the Saudi consulate - and the culprits, they think, were the members of a 15-man Saudi team that arrived that day, and left in the evening, reports correspondent Holly Williams.

US President Donald Trump called Khashoggi's suspected killing "a awful thing", but stopped short of assigning blame. "And you know what, there are other ways of punishing, to use a word that's a pretty harsh word, but it's true".

Saudi Arabia has rejected allegations the journalist was murdered inside its mission and insisted he had left the consulate safely.

He warned that that if it turns out that Saudi authorities are behind all this, the United States would inflict "severe punishment" on them.

The Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman has been on a reform drive to diversify the country's economy from oil.

Saudi Arabia has dismissed as "lies" allegations that it ordered his killing. Russian Federation wanted it, China wanted it, we wanted it.

Kudlow on "This Week" underscored Trump's saying that the U.S.is being "very tough" in its investigation of what happened to Khashoggi, who has recently been living in the US and who went into the consulate for documents he needed to get married. Turkish authorities suspect he was killed.

In just two sessions the Saudi bourse, the largest in the Arab world, has shed nearly $50 billion of its capitalisation, which now stands at around $450 billion.

Business barons, including British billionaire Richard Branson and Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, as well as media powerhouses like Bloomberg and CNN, have pulled out of next week's Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, dubbed "Davos in the desert".

Earlier this month, Trump suggested Saudi Arabia's king "might not be there for two weeks" without USA military support.

Cengiz also didn't just call for an investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance, she urged for the responsible party, "irrespective of their political positions", to be punished.
