"Most surprising thing to me is that she has no immediate plans or job to announce", says one such person.

Yet it's often said that the UN's biggest peacekeeping mission is directed against the Trump White House, and Mrs Haley was seen as a valuable ally.

US President Donald Trump talks with UN Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Oval Office of the White House, Oct. 9, 2018. During Mr Trump's presidential campaign, she sharply criticized his demeanor and warned what it might mean for U.S. diplomacy - even suggesting that his tendency to lash out at critics could cause a world war.

One of the names mentioned is former deputy national security adviser Dina Habib Powell who hails from an Egyptian background.

President Trump has accepted Nikki Haley's resignation as UN Ambassador, according to two sources briefed on their conversation.

She said that since the 2016 presidential election the United Nations had started to "respect" the U.S. again.

Sanford, a fellow former SC governor who has been allies with Haley in the past but is now an administration critic, said of the story: "Something doesn't smell right". She told Trump around six months ago that she was thinking of quitting by the end this year "to take a little time off", he said. President Trump praised her warmly both on personal and professional fronts, their remarks belying raging speculation in the Washington commentariat that there was something untoward in the development.

Before she was named by Mr Trump to her United Nations post, Mr Haley was governor of SC, the first woman to hold the post. ".I can speak for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo". Last month, before the annual U.N. General Assembly convened, Haley sparred with the new U.N. Human Rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, tweeting: "High Commissioner Bachelet would do better to encourage the Human Rights Council to focus on countries with reprehensible human rights records, several of whom sit on the Council itself". The sudden move sent shockwaves through the foreign policy community within the Trump administration.

"Countries may not like what we do, but they respect what we do", Haley said, adding: "It was a blessing to go into the United Nations with body armor on every day".

Haley raised eyebrows within the administration when she announced in April that Washington was going to impose sanctions on Moscow over its support of Syria's government.

But she fired back hours later telling Fox News: "With all due respect, I don't get confused".
