Beyond the close vote, the impact on the court's decisions going forward and whatever your opinion of the controversial nominee, Kavanaugh's confirmation fight challenged a number of long-standing norms.

She added that while sexual assault survivors should be believed, she did not see enough corroboration of the allegations against Kavanaugh, which he denies, from the FBI investigation.

The confirmation of Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court justice cements conservative control of the nation's highest court potentially for decades to come. The vote was periodically interrupted by protesters loudly erupting in the Senate gallery. Vice-President Mike Pence presided over the roll call, his potential tie-breaking vote unnecessary.

Murkowski voted "no" Friday on a procedural vote to advance Kavanaugh's nomination and opposed his confirmation on Saturday.

But Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY forecast gains for his party instead: "Change must come from where change in America always begins: the ballot box".

Kavanaugh's confirmation felt almost inevitable by Friday afternoon, when two previously undecided senators, Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced they would support him.

"We have differing views about the other qualifications of Judge Kavanaugh", the letter read. That balanced out the absence without affecting the outcome, and gave Kavanaugh the same two-vote margin he'd have received had both lawmakers voted.

The message came minutes after the Senate voted to confirm Kavanaugh, 50-48. Sen.

"This behavior revealed a hostility and belligerence unbecoming of someone seeking to be elevated to the Supreme Court", Sen.

"We saw a man filled with anger and aggression", Feinstein complained. "Women will not forget this".

He called the vote "a good day for America" and predicted voters will reward Republicans for it in the mid-term election.

Bush and his wife Laura, stood by Kavanaugh after Dr. Christine Blasey Ford accused him of sexually assaulting her at a high school party in 1982. "I sure as hell am", tweeted Alyssa Milano, who was outfit shamed when she showed up at the Senate Kavanaugh hearing to support Ford.

"Judge Kavanaugh's testimony was partisan, evasive, and on many points under oath, even untruthful", said Sen. McConnell called Kavanaugh "among the very best our nation has to offer." Sen. Bush spoke to the senators because they would not be as receptive to hearing from Trump.

Organized protesters harassed senators contemplating support for Kavanaugh. Police cleared the steps and the Capitol Plaza, and the protesters headed back to the Supreme Court.

A total of 164 people were arrested according to U.S. Capitol Police. Hundreds of other demonstrators watched from behind barricades.

A townhouse near the Washington residence of Republican Senator Susan Collins, whose backing for Kavanaugh helped get him over the line on Saturday, flew the flag of her home state ME upside down in protest.

After her testimony, Trump agreed to let the FBI investigate Ford's claims, but only for a week.

"We must always remember that it is when passions are most inflamed that fairness is most in jeopardy", said Collins, perhaps the chamber's most moderate Republican.

The announcements Friday by Republican Susan Collins of ME and Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia came after weeks of shocking accusations, hardball politics and Capitol protests. After some pushback, President Trump agreed to allow the Federal Bureau of Investigation to re-open Kavanaugh's background check and investigate the assault allegations.

Members of the Me Too movement voiced outrage after Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed for the US's top court amid an allegation of sexual assault and fears over abortion rights.
