Women aren't united against Kavanaugh

"Shame on you!" protesters yelled from the Senate gallery. He denied the allegations repeatedly, including in testimony before the committee on September 27.

When the final vote, 50-48 was called a victory for Kavanaugh, one woman shouted: "This is a stain on America".

"We have a lot of women that are extremely happy - a tremendous number - because they're thinking of their sons, they're thinking of their husbands and their brothers and their uncles and others and women are, I think, extremely happy", he added.

Critics have objected to Kavanaugh over his sexual assault allegations, as well as his record and statements that have been widely regarded as partisan.

Trump, who called Kavanaugh to congratulate him on Saturday, said he was "100 percent" certain that Ford named the wrong person in accusing the judge.

"He's going to be on the Supreme Court with a huge taint and a big asterisk after his name", Hirono said on ABC News' "This Week". "Our voters are on fire", McConnell said in an interview with Bloomberg News.

People protest Brett M. Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court outside the Supreme Court building in Washington on September 24. They said he also seemed too ready to rule for Trump in a possible federal court case against the president. It can cause complete avoidance of not wanting to even remember or think about what happened to you.

GOP operatives say they are seeing renewed Republican interest in states such as Wisconsin, where Democratic candidates have been polling strong.

The exchanges came as the end of the bitter Senate battle over Kavanaugh's confirmation became fodder for questions about political ramifications in the 2018 midterms and beyond.

The choice of Kavanaugh to replace retired justice Anthony Kennedy was controversial from the start - but the initial focus was exclusively on the conservative views held by the married father of two.

Yet Kavanaugh's path to confirmation seemed unfettered until Ford and two other women emerged with sexual misconduct allegations from the 1980s.

Senator Collins - a moderate Republican from ME - said Mr Kavanaugh was entitled to the "presumption of innocence" as the allegations against him were not substantiated with corroborating evidence.

"An FBI investigation that did not include interviews of Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh is not a meaningful investigation in any sense of the word", they said in a statement quoted in U.S. media.

Back in 2016, McConnell refused to hold hearings or meetings with Garland, leaving open the seat for the majority of the year.

Her lawyer, Debra Katz, said: "Professor Ford has not asked for anything of the sort".

Coons, instead, turned his attention to Trump for mocking Ford last week and said the Kavanaugh controversy was an indictment of the president's character as much as it was a battle within the Senate, coming as more women are speaking up about harrowing experiences.

A few Republican senators who had wavered over whether to vote for Kavanaugh finally backed him this week, saying they did so in part because a brief FBI investigation found no corroborating evidence of Ford's accusations.

Mr Trump tweeted that the demonstrators included female Mr Kavanaugh supporters who were "gathering all over Capitol Hill".
