Trump and Kim held an historic first summit in Singapore in June. "It was another step forward".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "had a good meeting with Chairman Kim today in Pyongyang", Trump tweeted.

Kim said the bilateral dialogue would continue to develop "based on the deep confidence between the two leaders", and expressed gratitude to Trump for making a honest effort to implement the agreement made at their June summit, KCNA said. He added he "look [ed] forward to seeing Chairman Kim again, in the near future".

Pompeo is making a day trip to the rogue regime and is not spending the night.

During Pompeo's meeting in Pyongyang, Kim invited inspectors to visit the Punggye-ri nuclear test site to "confirm that it has been irreversibly dismantled", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

Kim and Pompeo met for about two hours, and then had lunch together at the Paekhwawon, or 100 Flowers Garden, a prestigious state guesthouse, for another hour and a half, according to a pool report.

Pompeo's trip to Pyongyang happened amid negative signals from North Korea whose actions have fallen short of Washington's demands for a complete inventory of its nuclear weapons and irreversible steps to give up an arsenal that potentially threatens the United States.

The U.S. and Japan have pushed for the North to compile and turn over a detailed list of its nuclear sites to be dismantled as a next step in the process; the North has rejected that.

America's top diplomat left Tokyo for Pyongyang on Sunday after pledging that the US will coordinate with allies Japan and South Korea on efforts to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. USA officials have thus far said the penalties will remain in place until the North's denuclearization is fully verified. "So this is, I think, a good outcome for all of us", Pompeo said. "And we had a very successful morning".

Before visiting Pyongyang, Pompeo held talks in Tokyo with Japan's prime minister, and pledged that the Trump administration would coordinate and unify its strategy for denuclearization with its allies.

Also on Monday, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said he expects Kim to travel to Russian Federation and for Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit North Korea soon amid a global diplomatic push to resolve the nuclear crisis.

Pompeo had said en route to Asia he aimed "to make sure we understand what each side is truly trying to achieve".

In Tokyo, Pompeo told Abe that the USA wanted to work closely on nuclear talks and that he would raise with the North Koreans the issue of Japanese abductees held for decades by the regime.

But several experts told ABC News that North Korea hadn't done enough yet to earn an end-of-war declaration, let alone a second Trump-Kim summit.

The North also has accused Washington of making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands on denuclearization and insisted that sanctions should be lifted before any progress in nuclear talks.

Kim Song Hye, who had accompanied top North Korean official Kim Yong Chol on his June White House visit, described Trump as "generous" and "a leader" during staff-level discussions in Pyongyang.

Pompeo then planned to return in late August, only for Trump to cancel the trip at the last minute as it became apparent that the two sides remained far apart on their approach to the negotiations.

The regime's largest trading partners, China and Russian Federation, have been working together to argue for the removal of certain United Nations sanctions because North Korea has not tested a ballistic missile or nuclear device since past year. And at a news conference last month, Trump claimed that there is more progress behind the scenes than the public recognizes. "I hope Secretary Pompeo's North Korea visit and the upcoming second U.S".
