Data security expert Trevor Reschke said that like any website which sees large volumes of card transactions, British Airways was a ripe target for hackers.
In a public statement released through the airline's channels, British Airways has admitted that during the period of August 21st to September 5th, its website and mobile app were compromised and that detailed personal and credit card data had been stolen.
Anyone who thinks they may have been a subject of fraud as a result of the attack should contact their bank or credit card provider as a matter of urgency to prevent any further malicious activity occurring, BA said in the statement.
BA says the breach relates to bookings made between 10.58pm on August 21 and 9.45pm on September 5. British Airways said the thieves did not get a hold of anyone's travel or passport information.
As a precaution, customers could also reset their ba.com password and choose a new strong and unique one.
Another BA customer, Stephanie Jowers, said she contacted the airline hours before the hack was announced to query a suspicious charge on her account but was not informed it could have been compromised.
Shares of British Airways fell by 4 percent in early Friday trading, wiping out about $648 million in market value. The rule says if such breach amounts to the violation of customers' freedoms and rights, the affected company must never delay in informing its customers.

BA said that all customers affected by the breach have been contacted and the breach only affects the people who bought tickets during that time frame.
BA took out full-page adverts in the United Kingdom newspapers on Friday to apologize, while shares in parent group IAG slid three percent in the early morning London deals.
The hack comes just over a year after a power outage forced the company to cancel around 700 flights from London's two biggest airport in May 2017. Its CEO, Alex Cruz, tells the BBC, "We will compensate them for any financial hardship that they may have suffered".
While BA did not comment on the scale of the attack, Sky News has reported that as many as 380,000 card payments have been compromised.
