'Smokey and the Bandit' star Burt Reynolds dead at 82

According to Us Weekly, Reynolds went into cardiac arrest at a hospital in Florida earlier on Thursday.

Stars have taken to social media to pay tribute to Reynolds.

Last April the fading box-office legend showed showed up bravely showed up at the premiere of his final Hollywood hurrah, a film aptly called "Dog Years", but fans were horrified at his appearance. Reynolds also generated attention for financial woes and his struggles with prescription pain medication.

Burt died of a heart attack on 6 September, according to TMZ.

Reynolds was known for appearing in classics like "Smokey and the Bandit", "Boogie Knights" and "Cannonball Run". He did win a Golden Globe for the role in 1998, and another Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy in 1992 for his role in the CBS series Evening Shade.

In December, audiences will see Reynolds in one of his final roles in Defining Moments.

Very early in his TV career, he played Quint on Gunsmoke.

Toward the end of the decade he received critical kudos for his performance as a self-deluded porno director in Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, which brought him an Oscar nomination for supporting actor.

Reynolds, known for "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Deliverance", among other major cinematic productions, is survived by his son, Quinton.

While his popularity waned relatively, Reynolds continued to score movie and TV roles into the 1990s.

The Burt Reynolds Ranch was a sprawling 153-acre estate, which included a petting zoo which was used for filming scenes for Smokey and the Bandit. His breakout movie was 1971's Deliverance.

Reynolds himself admitted over the years that ending his relationship with Field was probably one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

The one that got away: The icon said that Sally Field was the love that got away. The actor was as much of a ladies' man off-screen, and was married twice, to Judy Carne from 1963 to 1965 and to Loni Anderson from 1988 to 1993.
