Gingrich also called Woodward's book "very sad", lamenting that the reporter "had a chance to do a book that would have been truly interesting".

"It's just nasty stuff", Trump said.

Another former Trump official, who spoke with the Post on condition of anonymity, admitted that there is nothing in Woodward's book that strikes them as untrue or implausible given their own experiences working within the Trump White House. But Woodward's book repeats the claim, according to the Post.

In another, Trump allegedly wanted to assassinate Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad following the dictator's civilian chemical attack a year ago.

Mattis had to explain that the expenses in the region are meant to "avoid a Third World War" but it's implied Trump still didn't get it.

Mr Mattis told associates after a separate incident that Mr Trump acted like "a fifth- or sixth-grader", according to the book.

The book also claims that Gary Cohn, the former director of the National Economic Council, said he took papers from Trump's desk to prevent him from withdrawing from the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders says in a statement: "This book is nothing more than fabricated stories, many by former disgruntled employees, told to make the President look bad".

When asked about the allegations, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley denied ever hearing threats made by Trump against al-Assad. "I'm committed to the President, his agenda, and our country".

The Washington Post reports that Conway has privately been telling people that "Woodward was credible and that his book could be damaging".

According to the book, former chief economic adviser Gary Cohn realized Trump might sign a letter withdrawing the USA from our trade agreement with South Korea - limiting our ability to keep tabs on North Korea's missile launches.

Woodward's reporting is drawn from hundreds of hours of interviews with people with firsthand knowledge of the events he describes and quotes he includes are backed up by documentation he reviewed. "Republicans want STRONG BORDERS and NO CRIME", the White House statement reads, echoing both Trump's campaign-trail rhetoric and Twitter syntax and capitalization.

Mr Trump compares his first chief of staff, Reince Priebus, to a rat.

"He just made something up".

Other aides insulted Mr Trump behind his back, according to the book. "I don't even know why any of us are here".

Supposedly, Trump also called Sessions "mentally retarded". "I said NEITHER, never used those terms on anyone, including Jeff, and being a southerner is a GREAT thing".

"The idea I ever called the president an idiot is not true".

Trump's former lawyer in the Russian Federation probe, John Dowd, is also said to have doubted Trump's ability to avoid perjuring himself should he sit down with special counsel Robert Mueller.

John Kelly, centre, and General James Mattis are both quoted in Bob Woodward's book despairing of president Trump's decision-making processes.

"He's an idiot. It's pointless to try to convince him of anything", White House Chief of Staff John Kelly reportedly complained during a small group meeting.

Trump then reached out to Woodward after the manuscript was completed, belatedly saying he wanted to participate. "So I have another bad book coming out". According to CBS News, Fear is set to be released later this month. He's never going to see that document. "It's either that or an orange jumpsuit".

In a statement issued Tuesday, Dowd says, "There was no so-called "practice session" or "re-enactment" of a mock interview at the Special Counsel's office".
