Actress Piper Perabo (Notorious, Covert Affairs) was arrested Tuesday morning in Washington, D.C., while protesting at the Senate confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. "Judge Kavanaugh is a decent man and should be confirmed".

The week of hearings on Kavanaugh's nomination began with a sense of inevitability that the 53-year-old appellate judge eventually will be confirmed, perhaps in time for the new term on October 1 and little more than a month before congressional elections.

The Kavanaugh hearings start Tuesday.

Kavanaugh sat patiently for almost seven hours, listening to Republican and Democrats speak for and against his joining the court before he finally got his chance to address the panel.

Republicans hold a one-vote majority in the Senate.

Republicans brushed aside complaints that Kavanaugh is too partisan and accused Democrats of stalling tactics.

Democrats on the committee complained that hundreds of thousands of pages of documents from Kavanaugh's time in the White House have not been turned over.

"The Brett Kavanaugh hearings for the future Justice of the Supreme Court are truly a display of how mean, angry, and despicable the other side is", Trump wrote on Twitter.

So far, no Republicans have said they plan to vote against Kavanaugh.

And the worst part about this is that it really hurts Judge Kavanaugh and it hurts the court.

President Donald Trump's second Supreme Court nominee is poised to succeed swing vote Justice Anthony Kennedy, the conservative-centrist who joined with liberals in some key decisions to uphold abortion rights.

Democrat senators regularly interrupted Grassley to demand the committee be suspended until they received all the documents they had requested.

The "Coyote Ugly" star posted video of herself being escorted out of the hearing room by Capitol Police while the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing was underway.

- Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation hearing turned into a political spectacle within moments of Tuesday's kickoff, as top Democrats tried to overtake the session with a rapid-fire string of objections and protesters shouted and screamed from the audience.

He has been on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for 12 years and has authored 307 opinions, concurrences and dissents.

Since Trump first announced Kavanaugh as his nominee, there has been a great deal of concern regarding Kavanaugh's stance on reproductive health, namely abortion rights.

Liberal activists have pinned their slim hopes to block Kavanaugh on two Republican senators who support abortion rights: Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski. "He could have absolutely shook my hand and said: 'I'm sorry for your loss.' I mean - if nothing else".

Veteran Democrat Dick Durbin said Kavanaugh "totally reversed" after working in the White House when Bush was considering warrantless wiretapping and torture of enemy combatants, and warned that a similar position would only serve to insulate Trump.

The hearing gave Democrats a chance to make their case against Kavanaugh ahead of November's congressional elections, in which they are seeking to seize control of Congress from Trump's fellow Republicans.
