Cancer Linked Weed Killer Found in Kids’ Cereals

The story has been corrected to state KIND does not have glyphosate in its products. The group said the majority of oat products in the study exceeded that level. This has been corrected.

A hearty bowl of oatmeal is a healthy way to start your day, but according to a new study, that bowl of oatmeal can contain unsafe levels of glyphosate, a weed-killing chemical linked to cancer.

Some types of oat cereals, oatmeal, granola and snack bars contain higher levels of a chemical found in the weed killer Roundup than what the Environmental Working Group considers safe, according to a report released Wednesday by the advocacy group.

The amounts of glyphosate found in the products typically measured in the hundreds of parts per billion, or less than 0.000001 per cent.

The World Health Organization has classified glyphosate as a "probable human carcinogen", though the product's harm to humans is still being debated.

California, known for its powerful cancer warnings, has determined that there is a one in 100,000 risk of cancer from glyphosate when more than 1.1 milligrams is consumed per day.

In early August, a jury in California ordered Roundup's parent company, Monsanto, to pay $289-million in damages to a man with terminal cancer.

This study said Cheerios and Quaker Oats made the list of potential cereals and oats with high levels of the chemical.

General Mills also responded to the findings in a statement sent to Fast Company. (See those statements, as well as EWG's response, at the bottom of this article). Their daily glyphosate intake is estimated at 230 times the 160ppb benchmark, according to EWG.

Yet determining whether the pesticide is safe has been an argument that has continued for years, with multiple research in support and against the chemical being birthed as a result.

"We don't think it does enough in particular to protect children", Faber said.

However, glyphosate has been identified as carcinogenic by the France-based International Agency for Research on Cancer. The team studied almost 45,000 people who had applied glyphosate as part of their jobs.

"Glyphosate does not belong in cereal".

Despite the complaints filed against the company, Monsanto still argued that the EPA had consistently supported the safe and effective use of glyphosate.

Information from NBC News was included in this report. Farmers will spray the weed-killing chemical on crops, such as wheat, oats and lentils, before harvest. "We continue to work closely with farmers, our suppliers and conservation organizations to minimize the use of pesticides on the crops and ingredients we use in our foods". Producing healthy, wholesome food is Quaker's number one priority, and we've been doing that for more than 140 years. "Quaker does not add glyphosate during any part of the milling process".

Plenty of other companies got back to Ad Age with similar statements backing the safety of their products.

Just because a pesticide level is legal in food doesn't mean that level is safe. The new report has also seen wide circulation in the media, including a piece on CNN.

The group found the chemical in all but five of 29 oat-based foods.
