The 66-year-old star of "Marked for Death" was granted Russian citizenship in 2016 and has defended Putin's policies, including the 2014 annexing of Crimea. President Putin, while presenting Seagal a Russian passport in 2016, said that he hoped the gesture would serve as a symbol of how fractious ties between Moscow and Washington were starting to improve.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday that it had appointed the action star as a "special representative" for Russian-American humanitarian relations. "I take this honour very seriously", he wrote on Twitter.

The Russian ministry said he would not be paid for his envoy role.

Seagal's grandmother was born in Vladivostok, and the actor and Putin share a passion for martial arts.

"The goal was to promote the further development of Russian - American relations in the humanitarian sphere, including cooperation in the sphere of culture, art, public and youth exchanges and so on", - noted in Department.

Seagal, who holds a dual citizenship of the United States and Russian Federation, is known for his support of Vladimir Putin, to whom he once referred as "one of the greatest living world leaders". President Vladimir Putin and Seagal are close friends, which is more than likely why this new position was given.

President Donald Trump has been criticized for his reluctance to speak out against Russian Federation or President Vladimir Putin, and the addition to Steven Seagal into the mix isn't going to help matters.

Seagal does seem particularly interested in the former Soviet Union.

The Independent says that Seagal has "faced some criticism for some comments he has made about the controversial Russian leader", including describing Putin as "one of the greatest world leaders" during a 2013 interview.
