United States First Lady Melania Trump, celebrities, National Basketball Association players and even media men came in defense of LeBron James against insulting statements coming from American President Donald Trump.

James recently opened a public elementary school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio for at-risk kids.

Her statement comes after a back-and-forth between James and her husband. “He made Lebron look smart, which isnt easy to do.”.

Trump previewed his message for the Columbus-area rally with a tweet saying that while Balderson "is strong" on issues like crime and immigration, "his opponent is a puppet of Nancy Pelosi/high taxes".

"What I've noticed over the past few months", James said in reference to the president, "[is] he's kinda used sports to kinda divide us, and that's something I can't relate to".

In September 2017, James called Trump a “bum” for rescinding his invitation to the Golden State Warriors to celebrate their basketball championship with a visit to the White House.

But in yet another blow for the President, Jordan came out in support of James, saying he's "doing fantastic work for his community".

The first lady's platform, "Be Best", is all about encouraging children to conduct themselves in an honorable manner, and she has made promoting children's welfare a key piece of her time in the White House. In the feature, James criticises Trump's attempt to use sports as a divisive tool.

Along with Jordan, a number of other athletes spoke out in support of James.

Following the airing of the interview, the President insulted James and interviewer Don Lemon in a series of tweets. "A man who puts kids in classrooms or one who puts kids in cages?" he posted, referring to a school that James has started for at-risk children in his hometown and the Trump administration policy of separating children from families crossing into the United States illegally. Lemon tweeted, "Who's the real dummy?"

The statement followed a Twitter rant on Friday from her husband in response to an interview James had given to CNN. But the attack on James, who was being interviewed by another black man, to some resembled a racial dog whistle.

James said he chose to open the school, located down the street from his high school, because he knows exactly what young students are going through.

He also argued that Mr Trump's actions had encouraged racists, saying: "I think [racism's] always been there".
