At least 75 people were shot in one of the most violent weekends this year, spurred by a seven-hour period early Sunday when 40 were shot.

June marked 15 straight months of fewer killings and shootings, police said, adding, however, on June 25, at least 21 were shot and two died.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson planned a 11 a.m. Monday news conference to discuss the violence. "It's the same people pulling the triggers". "This isn't a widespread issue among citizens of this city".

"I promise this city that we won't be defeated, we won't be overrun by that small group, that small element that is committing these reckless acts", said Chief Waller. "Mayor Emanuel is out of touch with reality". What happened this weekend did not happen in every neighborhood of Chicago but it is unacceptable to happen in any neighborhood of Chicago.

Some want the resignations of the city's police superintendent and Mayor Rahm Emanuel. I hear people holding us accountable all the time. While we shouldn't condone the use of tactics which close down infrastructure in the name of free speech, it's clear that the residents of the city have plenty to be upset about. I never hear that. "They get a pass from everybody".

"Certainly CPD [Chicago Police Department] can do better but at the end of the day, the members of CPD don't go to bed with these individuals at night, they don't wake up with them in the morning", Mr Johnson said. Two gunmen exited a vehicle and shot four people at a party then fled the scene. Two people in a black Cadillac shoot and wound three people on the street: a 30-year-old woman in the calf, a 30-year-old man in the calf and ankle, and a 29-year-old man in the chest. Before the weekend's surge, they credited it with declines in homicides and shootings from past year. The victims were all hospitalized in stable condition, according to WLS-TV.

Police blamed the spike in shootings largely on gang conflicts, while experts pointed to the hot summer which has descended on the Windy City and its effect on crime rates.

Young children were caught up in the violence as a 13-year-old boy was shot twice in the right arm and an 11-year-old boy was shot in the leg in separate incidents, police said. The Chicago Sun-Times compiled the shooting death totals.

"Despite what we saw this weekend, I'm still pleased between CPD's work, the mayor's investments, and the work of our community members, that we're still reducing our gun violence this year", Johnson said.

Democrat Illinois State Representative, La Shawn Ford, turned to President Donald Trump for help after dozens died during a violent weekend in Chicago.

Giuliani sent out three tweets praising Democratic mayoral candidate McCarthy, twice calling him "Jerry".

The mayor had no immediate comment on Giuliani's attacks.
