One part of Mueller's inquiry and congressional investigations has focused on a meeting months before the November election in Trump Tower in NY between Russian officials, Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son, and other campaign aides.

In an angry tweet yesterday morning, however, he attacked the "Fake News" media reports that he was concerned about his son's role.

"This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics", the president said.

In a post on Twitter, Trump also denied reports in the Washington Post and CNN that he was concerned his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., could be in legal trouble because of the meeting with the Russians, including a lawyer with Kremlin ties.

Trump was apparently responding to reporting from The Washington Post and other outlets that the president has been increasingly brooding in private about the Mueller probe, particularly as it relates to his son's possible entanglement in the investigation.

Trump, Jr. himself has offered conflicting statements about the meeting, telling Senate investigators in September that he wanted to "hear [the Russians] out" regarding their "information concerning the fitness, character or qualifications of a presidential candidate".

It was Trump's most direct acknowledgement that the motive for the June 2016 meeting was to get dirt on Hillary Clinton, his Democratic rival for the presidency.

Sekulow's vow comes as another member of the president's legal team - Rudy Giuliani - said negotiations on Trump sitting down with Mueller's team are wrapping.

The president's attorneys at first denied Trump's involvement in drafting the response to the Times, but months later, in a letter meant to explain why Mueller should not interview Trump, they agreed that the president had, in fact, been the author of the statement.

Ex-Trump attorney Michael Cohen has since reportedly claimed that President Trump knew in advance of that meeting, amid an ongoing spat in which Cohen has released a secret audio recording of his conversations with Trump.

Trump has denied he had any prior knowledge of the meeting and repeated that claim on Sunday.

Sunday's tweet appears to acknowledge that the meeting was actually predicated on opposition research: "This was a meeting to get information on an opponent". Cohen has indicated that he would tell prosecutors that Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting ahead of time.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether Trump campaign members coordinated with Russian Federation to sway the White House race in his favour.

Mueller would have the option to issue a subpoena compelling the president to testify if Trump chose not to be interviewed.

"I made a mistake in my statement", he said. "I believe it's in the best interest of the president and of the United States of America and the American people for that investigation to run the course, for all the truth to come out".

"The question is what law, statue or rule or regulation's been violated?" At that point, he said, Trump's attorneys would raise what Trump has alleged are Mueller's "conflicts of interest".

Despite a show of force from his national security team this week as a warning against future Russian election meddling, Trump again deemed the matter a "hoax" this week.
