The network's board of governors on Monday are scheduled to hold a teleconference meeting "around midday Eastern time", to discuss plans for independent members to probe sexual misconduct allegations against Moonves. They're expected to select a special committee to oversee the investigation into Moonves's conduct and the broader culture at CBS, which will reportedly be carried out by an outside law firm.

Les Moonves is facing allegations of sexual assault from several former business associates, including actress Illeana Douglas, writer Janet Jones, producer Christine Peters, screenwriter Dinah Kirgo, and two additional actresses who chose to remain nameless.

The board announced its action in a statement Monday, delaying a decision on the fate of the 23-year company veteran.

"If Les Moonves does step aside, it would increase the chances that CBS and Viacom would merge", Hagey said.

Following Monday's board meeting, CBS announced that it postponed the company's 2018 annual meeting of stockholders that was previously scheduled for August 10 until further notice.

Chen who shares son Charlie, 8, with Moonves, previously described her husband as a "devoted husband and inspiring corporate leader".

CBSi and Entertainment Tonight are both owned by CBS.

At first, it was no surprise that Stephen Colbert joked about Leslie Moonves at the top of CBS's "The Late Show" on Monday night.

A lot of powerful men have been taken down by good reporting in the past 10 months and this weekend, The New Yorker's Ronan Farrow - the reporter behind the original Harvey Weinstein story - exposed yet another one. "I don't know. I don't know who does know".

"I don't know what's going to happen, but I do believe in accountability", Colbert said. Chen's The Talk co-star Sharon Osbourne questioned "the timing" of the allegations against Moonves as she offered support to the high-profile CBS couple. Those were mistakes, and I regret them immensely. In a statement to The New Yorker, Moonves acknowledged that he "may have made some women uncomfortable by making advances. But I always understood and respected - and abided by the principle - that "no" means 'no, ' and I have never misused my position to harm or hinder anyone's career".

If Moonves is suspended or departs altogether, CBS will face a serious power vacuum at a time of rapid change roiling the industry.

Moonves has been very well compensated for his company's success.
