The man who grabbed the ball on the widely seen video had actually already helped the little boy get a ball earlier.

An eagle-eyed fan seated behind him wasted no time in scrambling under the seat to retrieve the ball, before proudly showing it off and handing it to the woman sitting with him.

But thanks to the social media age we live in, justice was soon done.

The Cubs tried to make it up to the boy by giving him a ball signed by All-Star infielder Javier Baez.

Deadspinwas the first to report the news nationwide.

He tweeted: 'I spoke with people from the Cubs. He was a great guy.

"He had already helped that kid get a ball. But that goodwill went out the window because the ballboy specifically tossed the ball to the child in the front row". "TV got this all wrong".

Although it is nice that the man was so eager to provide his lady friend with a thoughtful gift, he should have picked a better souvenir to give her than one that he essentially stole from a little boy.

Chicago Cubs' Javier Baez saved the day for one heartbroken youngster after they saw off St Louis Cardinals. "All is well. Guy is A-OK so let it go people".

A bystander close to the situation told the Chicago Tribune, the man in question didn't cheat the child out of the ball and took aim at online warriors for not knowing the full story.

"The whole world is calling this guy the most evil guy in the world for being a ball thief", he said.
