Cave diver considers suing over Musk's baseless 'pedo' accusation

Elon Musk 05 Thailand cave rescuer considers legal action against Elon Musk for 'pedo' comment
Lindsey Cook | 18 July, 2018, 10:43

The British cave diver publicly called a "pedo" by tech billionaire Elon Musk is considering taking legal action against the Tesla CEO. But to understand why Musk said it, you need to watch Unsworth's news interview in which he called Musk's offers to help rescue the boys "a PR stunt".

But asked if he would take legal action against Musk over the allegation, Unsworth said: "If it's what I think it is yes".

Musk defended his vessel further and then added: "Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it".

The tweets were later deleted.

But while Musk also defended his donation by mentioning that he has donated almost $6 million to the Sierra Club, an environmentalist group fighting climate change, he is also helping keep fringe extremists in the Republican Party in power.

A number of analysts and investors, requesting anonymity, told Reuters that Musk's comments were adding to their concerns that his public statements were distracting him from Tesla's main business of producing electric cars.

In the end, it was the team of divers who saved the children through a complicated rescue mission.

Mr Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research, who has always been bullish on Tesla, said the latest dust-ups involving Mr Musk only show "he is human", and do not detract from his quality as a great innovator.

Unsworth has said he is considering legal action against the billionaire entrepreneur, who is chief executive of the electric auto maker Tesla.

Elon Musk makes unfounded accusation against Thai cave rescuer

As Ohlheiser wrote, Musk soon "started a Twitter argument over how much credit he deserved for offering to help save the youths", during which argument he showed off an email of himself corresponding with one of the British divers and incidentally claimed that the Thai official in charge of the rescue had not been in charge.

Musk called the diver a "pedo" on Sunday in a tweet he later deleted.

He said Mr Musk appeared to be following in the footsteps of US President Donald Trump in using Twitter to vent frustration and insult anyone with whom he disagrees.

In a Tweet, Musk had proposed "a tiny kid sized submarine" for the rescue. Pressed to explain the accusation, Musk instead doubled down: "Bet ya a signed dollar it's true".

Loup Ventures published an open letter to Musk on behalf of investors, saying the comments to Unsworth "crossed the line" and calling for an apology.

Considering the immensity of Musk's following and his net worth, the Brit could get a hefty settlement if he decides to pursue legal action.

There have also been larger issues involving Tesla. "The challenge is that he would have to find assets of Musk's outside of the America".

Unsworth, who lives part of the year in Thailand, took part in the gargantuan 18-day effort to retrieve the 12 boys and their coach, a mission that ended on July 10 when the last five members were extracted.
