A jaguar has escaped from its enclosure at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans and killed six other animals before it was captured, forcing the zoo to close for the day.

It would appear this was more than enough time for the jaguar to embark on a killing spree, mauling four alpacas, one emu and a fox, as well as injuring three others - two alpacas and another fox. No people were hurt in the incident.

"We're looking at every possible cause", Kyle Burks, the zoo's vice-president and managing director, said.

'In over a 100-year period, we've never had any incident like this, ' said the president and CEO of Audubon Nature Institute, Ron Forman, at press conference. The zoo is going to remain closed through Saturday as officials continue their investigation, but it is expected to return to normal operating hours on Sunday, July 15, 2018.

"These accidents happen, you know, on some kind of a recurring basis around the world", said Doug Cress, chief executive of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. "This is by far the biggest tragedy we've had".

The 58-acre zoo is 100 years old and houses 2,000 animals.

"He's a young male jaguar", Hamilton said". 'Unfortunately, it was doing what jaguars do'.

Audubon Zoo said it would continue to investigate and make improvements.

Burks said the zoo will investigate the incident, including how the jaguar got free. In 2001, a 70-pound cub named Mulac got loose for about 10 minutes before he was brought down with a tranquilizer dart.

No humans were injured, although the circumstances of the escape sparked a worrisome thought at what might have been: The "jaguar jungle" is also home to a children's play area.
