Trump nominates Brett Kavanaugh to Supreme Court

Yes Another Liberal SCOTUS Meltdown Is Coming...And It Could Be One For The Record Books Capito looking for Supreme Court nominee similar to Gorsuch

"Throughout legal circles he's considered a judge's judge, a true thought leader among his peers", Trump, who named conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch to the court a year ago, told an applauding audience in the White House East Room during the announcement that was carried on prime-time TV.

Kavanaugh, a Catholic, was on a list of 25 candidates compiled for President Trump by the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation.

Both were invited to the White House on Monday to participate in Trump's announcement, but they both declined the invitation.

Kavanaugh, who serves on the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, is expected to be less receptive to abortion and gay rights than Kennedy was. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1987, and received his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1990.

At 53, Kavanaugh is relatively young. "We need a nominee who understands that the court must protect the rights of all Americans, not just political interest groups and the powerful", she tweeted.

Judge Kavanaugh has a history of limiting abortion access during his more than a decade on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. They believe Kavanaugh is not sufficiently conservative and disagree with portions of opinions he has written relating to abortion and the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

He will be accompanied by former Sen.

"My judicial philosophy is straightforward", Kavanaugh said.

"A judge must interpret statutes as written".

Judge Kavanaugh ruled against the teen, saying the government should have had more time to place the teen with a sponsor who could help with the abortion decision. The New York Times first reported McConnell's call with Trump.

"Not being a politician, I think people wanted to hear what some of my choices may be, and it was pretty effective", Trump said of the list, on the day Kennedy's retirement was announced.

While Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing will take place in the fall, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell already warned Trump that his nominee might have a hard confirmation battle over the other shortlisted candidates.

"Kavanaugh's personal writings show that he would allow Donald Trump's abuses of power to go unchecked", the organization said. Once that is done and Kavanaugh has completed a questionnaire from the Judiciary Committee, formal hearings can begin. Afterward, from 1993-94 he clerked for Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Republicans hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, though with ailing Senator John McCain battling cancer in his home state of Arizona they now can muster only 50 votes.

Leo said, however, that ultimately Trump would succeed at lining up conservative support for anyone he selected.

Kennedy was often a member of five-to-four majority decisions on the high court. "The members of that community disagree about many things but we are united by a commitment to serve".

Heitkamp issued a lengthy statement that, in part, highlighted her vote for Trump's previous Supreme Court nominee, Justice Neil Gorsuch. Trump signed Kavanaugh's nomination papers Monday evening in the White House residence. Joe Donnelly, West Virginia Sen.

All three face gruelling re-election campaigns this year in their conservative states. Those issues will be central to a heated fight among Democrats to persuade moderate Republicans and moderates in their own party to oppose Kavanaugh. Despite the fact he has not ruled on any cases touching abortion, Senate Democrats may united to block the nomination, and while pro-abortion Republicans like Susan Collins from ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska may refuse to confirm someone they believe might overturn Roe v. Wade.

"We have known this moment was coming, and so over a year we have been organizing in these Senate battleground states", she said, "knowing that these senators would be key to a confirmation battle". As a woman and mother, she could upend the narrative pushed by Democrats that Trump's pick would erode women's rights.

"Senators should meet with him, we should debate his qualifications on the Senate floor and cast whatever vote we believe he deserves", said Manchin. He has been a judge on the federal appeals court in Washington since 2006. He followed a one-year fellowship in the office of U.S. Solicitor General Kenneth Starr with a clerkship for Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Senate Republicans' stonewalling strategy extended to lower courts as well.

Calling Trump's Supreme Court nomination an "honor and privilege", Kavanaugh addressed a crowd in the White House's East Room alongside his wife and two daughters.
