Storm Strengthening To Hurricane Off Carolinas As Puerto Rico Faces Storm Beryl

Grady Vargas | 09 July, 2018, 05:11

At 11 a.m. EDT, the storm's center was located about 160 miles (260 kilometers) south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

While Chris is expected to become a hurricane, it will stay offshore and head to sea, according to the storm center.

The next hurricane advisory is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday.

As for Beryl it has lose its circulation and tropical characteristics making it just a remnant low with winds of 45 miles per hour and gust up to 60 miles per hour.

According to the 5:00 a.m. advisory, the center of Tropical Storm Beryl was located near latitude 13.7 North, longitude 56.0 West. Beryl is moving toward the west-northwest near 20 miles per hour (31 km/h) and this motion with an increase in forward speed is expected during the next couple of days.

While there are no current coastal watches or warnings in effect, these swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip-current conditions. Some pockets of moderate to heavy showers and occasional gusty winds are still possible however, with rainfall accumulations of 25 - 50mm (1 to 2inches) with isolated higher amounts. "Hence the tropical storm watch for Barbados has been discontinued", the Barbados Met Office said last this morning.

A tropical storm warning is up on Guadeloupe and Dominica, while a tropical storm watch has been issued for the French Caribbean territories of Martinique, St. Martin and St. Barts as well as St. Maarten, Barbados, St. Lucia, Saba and St. Eustatius.

The storm that had been the Atlantic season's first hurricane has been losing power, but residents on islands hit hard by storms a year ago stocked up on food and water Saturday and prepared for possible damaging winds, rains and waves.

About 7,000 houses and businesses in Puerto Rico still lack power after Hurricane Maria leveled an electricity grid that was ill-maintained before the storm.
