Francesco Molinari delivered a record performance to win the final edition of the Quicken Loans National by eight shots, matching the largest margin this year on the PGA Tour.

Molinari holed a 50-foot eagle putt to start the back nine, and he never stopped until he turned the final round into a runaway at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

"I came here obviously because I was right on the bubble in the FedExCup and I wanted to gain a better position, so I guess job done", said Molinari, who cruised to his first Tour title with a closing 62 and an eight-stroke victory over Ryan Armour.

It was also an encouraging week for Tiger Woods as he continues to improve since his return to the circuit, the American shooting 66 to finish 10 shots behind the victor in a tie for fourth on his last start before the British Open.

In 2017, Kyle Stanley climbed the leaderboard to get into a playoff with Charles Howell III and emerged the victor on the first extra hole to earn his second career PGA TOUR win.

Woods finished T4 and showed some promising signs in his latest start (others not so promising), and he talked about his British Open prep for Carnoustie toward the end of his postround interview.

Toms sank a 15-foot birdie on the par-3 16th hole at the Broadmoor to take the lead, then held on with a 20-foot downhill make after laying up from a fairway bunker on the 17th hole.

The French Open offered valuable Ryder Cup points on a course where the matches will be played this fall. That was more bothersome to Ancer than the heat.

"I want to finish strong, but as I said, it is just better not to expect anything". He also won the 2010 WGC-HSBC Champions in China.

"The putts I missed, I hit a lot of good ones, which I don t mind because I hadn t been doing that for a while, so this was nice".

His trouble stemmed from a variety of issues: a poor drive here, a poor approach there, the inability to make a putt when necessary.

Molinari beat Lee Westwood by one shot, and no one else was closer than 10 shots in Shanghai. He was making a lot of putts on the front nine. Molinari missed only 10 greens in regulation over 72 holes.

Woods wants officials to refrain from watering the course heavily overnight, believing he has a better chance of winning if conditions are dry, firm and hard. He missed the putt. For the third straight day, he hit 13 of 18 greens.

"It was nice to make a couple of birdies coming in, granted missed a little kick-in on 14", he said after another solid display since undergoing spinal fusion surgery past year.

Woods served as the tournament host when the PGA Tour stayed in Washington in 2007 down the road at Congressional, a tournament with a mission of honouring military around the Fourth of July.
