Investigators are reviewing Ramos' social media postings and searched his apartment, where Altomare said they found evidence of the planning of the attack. A 38-year-old man has been charged with five counts of murder.

"We get a threat call a day". Authorities say he has a longtime grudge against the paper, suing it in 2012 after it ran an article about him pleading guilty to harassing a woman. Anne Arundel County police records show a detective concluded Ramos wasn't a threat to employees.

Police declined to name him at a press conference late Thursday, saying they had "an obligation and a responsibility to these victims that we get it right".

Ramos had a dispute of many years with the paper over a story it had written about a criminal case against him.

Rob Hiaasen, 59, a former Baltimore Sun feature writer who joined The Capital as assistant editor in 2010 and wrote a Sunday column.

It's unclear whether the tweets on the Ramos account violated Twitter's rules.

Neither Hartley nor Marquardt is still employed by the paper or were at its office on Thursday. "I was breathing really loud and was trying not to, but I couldn't be quiet".

The Gazette story details how the gunman entered the newspaper office's main entrance at around 2:30 p.m., shattering the glass door with the first blasts from his shotgun.

US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly referred to the media as the "enemy of the people", on Friday described the shooting as "horrific". The shootings are believed to be the deadliest attack on journalists in the United States.

"I talked to Rob [by phone] Thursday morning - he talked about a headline clarification", Capital Gazette reporter Chase Cook told NPR.

Ramos appeared in the video feed in court in a blue, V-neck jail uniform.

Ramos is unemployed and lives alone, according to testimony presented at the hearing.

Journalists at the paper described the scene of Thursday's attack as a "war zone". A spokesperson for the public defender's office was not immediately available for comment. His defamation case was dismissed.

Officials earlier told reporters the accused, Jarrod Ramos, was not co-operating with the investigation.

"This attack shocked the conscience of our nation and filled our hearts with grief", he said. "Journalists like all Americans should be free of the fear of being violently attacked while doing their jobs".

Some-the ones who have bought into this idea that journalists are the enemy and that critical news = fake news-are blaming the journalists themselves.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan commended the quick police response and ordered Maryland flags to be flown at half-staff. According to a complaint the classmate filed in 2011, Ramos relentlessly sent her aggressive private messages, harassed her therapist for information and contacted her employer to tell them she was "a bipolar drunkard leading a double life", which she said cost her her job. The woman's experience, he wrote, "provides a frightening look at the false intimacy the Internet can offer and the venom that can hide behind a computer screen".

"He is very cold, he is very calculated, he is very intelligent", Lori said.

Melissa Wilson, who came to the vigil with her husband, Benjamin, their 9-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son, said many Annapolis residents have "one degree of separation" from at least one victim.

A year later Ramos filed a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper in a Maryland state court and later added a charge of invasion of privacy over the newspaper's coverage of his conviction.
