South Korea on Wednesday pulled off a shocker, defeating Germany 2-0 in their final Group F clash and eliminating the defending World Cup champion.

Germany's exit brought the third consecutive World Cup in which the defending champions have gone out at the group stages, with Spain and Italy facing the same fate in 2014 and 2010 respectively. Mexico lost to Sweden 0-3 on Wednesday, but Germany's loss sent Mexico through to the next round. South Korea countered by playing Son into a breakaway with an empty net, and the Tottenham star finished the game-and Germany's stay in Russia-with another goal.

Germany recovered from their opening defeat to Mexico by snatching a dramatic win over Sweden courtesy of a stoppage-time goal from Toni Kroos.

Since group stages were introduced in the World Cup in 1950 - though they missed out on participation in that edition - Germany have failed to advance to the next stage of the tournament for the first time. I'm still angry and disappointed and at the same time I feel sorry for all our fans who supported us in the stadium or at home in front of the tv or at public viewings.

Though South Korea were still eliminated from knockout contention, Jo was named the well-deserved Man of the Match.

It means Germany's hopes of becoming the first team to retain the World Cup since Brazil's victories in 1958 and 1962 ended in embarrassing fashion. After a VAR review for offside, the goal stood.

He said: "Until quite recently, we have probably been the most consistent, in terms of performance, team in the past 10, 12 years".

"We're not going to the last 16, but we did manage to beat the champions, and the World No. 1 team", Shin said.

The four-time winners peppered the South Korean goal throughout the final group game but a combination of blocks and heroic saves from goalkeeper Cho Hyun-Woo kept the score level after 90 minutes. The team's bad luck in Russian Federation continued Wednesday, as Mats Hummels was unable to put away a free header from 6 yards out late in the match. South Korea went down 2-1, with the first Mexican goal coming on a penalty and the second one on a breakaway followed by a defensive lapse.
