Samsung and Apple settle ongoing patent dispute from 2011

Apple and Samsung settle their patent dispute after 7 years of legal battles The Apple vs Samsung iPhone-copying lawsuit is finally over

San Francisco, Apple and Samsung have chose to end their epic patent infringement battle that began in 2011 and went all the way to the US Supreme Court. The case began with the iPhone 3GS and the Galaxy S i9000: since then, both Apple and Samsung have completely reinvented their software and hardware styling.

Those design elements were protected, prompting the jury to award Apple all the profits from sales of smartphones containing those features, Samsung lawyers said in their filing.

The courts handling this battle have issued numerous verdicts over time, and they've mostly been in Apple's favor.

"They have agreed to drop [the lawsuits] and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter", District Court Judge Lucy Koh announced today.

The case was decided on the balance of probabilities whether Samsung had copied Apple, and the courts decided for Apple, handing down a $539 million verdict for Apple.

The document doesn't specify the terms of the settlement, so it's unclear if Samsung agreed to pay the $539 million it was supposed to, or if a different agreement was reached.

"We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers".

An original trial finding that Samsung violated Apple patents preceded a lengthy appellate dueling over whether design features such as rounded edges are worth all the money made from a phone.

After waging war against each other in the courtroom for over seven years, the two sides have finally agreed to a settlement that will end all remaining claims and counterclaims.

The case had been sent back to the district court following a Supreme Court decision to revisit an earlier $400 million damage award.

Samsung paid US$548m of the US$1.05b owed to Apple in 2015, but appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the US$399m decision.
