Apple has 'higher-end' AirPods slated for 2019

They won't be waterproof, the report notes, but they will offer better protection from rain and sweat.

The company has internally discussed adding biometric sensors to future AirPods, such as a heart-rate monitor, to expand its health-related hardware offerings beyond the Apple Watch, they said. It's hard to get that much expertise in audio engineering in one place, even when you've got Apple's giant pile of money, and Apple may be relying on their name and the fact that you have to use wireless headphones or that terrible dongle with your iPhone.

The Apple Inc. division responsible for accessories such as the AirPods wireless earbuds recorded $12.9 billion in revenue during the last fiscal year.

So says Bloomberg, which reports that an upgraded version of Apple's AirPods - the firm's toothbrush-head-alike wireless earphones - will arrive next year with added noise cancellation and a longer wireless range.

When Apple launched AirPods in 2016, the earbuds went on sale with limited supply following a delay.

It's unclear exactly what the new HomePod will look like, but it's likely the Apple product that needs the most work.

The 2019 AirPods will probably be more expensive than the current $159 model. An in-house audio product team is run by Gary Geaves, formerly an engineer from B&W, a maker of speaker systems and headphones.

Reports also claim that the previously rumored over-the-ear models of Apple headphones will be delayed due to the upcoming AirPods.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will unveil its new AirPods as early as next year, according to Bloomberg sources.

The pricier model is expected to feature noise-cancelling technology, as well as water resistance. While Apple already owns and sells over-ear headphones from Beats, this pair would feature Apple's own branding, and serve as "a higher-end alternative" to the Beats headphones, which already cost between $300 and $350.

Apple is also said to be in the process of developing a new version of its HomePod smart speaker.

Apple did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Apple is now hoping to launch the device as early as next year.
