This is the first time Harden has claimed the MVP award, and he is the third Rockets player to win it.

Harden took home the honor over LeBron James in a landslide vote, and became the third player drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder to win the award.

The guard averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, joining Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson as the only rookies to post those numbers in a season.

- Since the start of the 2016-17 season, Harden is averaging 10 assists per game.

New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis is the other finalist for the MVP award. In this picture, Harden #13 of the Houston Rockets reacts to a play during Game Four of the Western Conference Finals of the 2018 NBA Playoffs against the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, May 22, 2018.

"But it seems that what we have today is a system where you don't want players to say anything at all". He finished fourth in the voting last season.

"But the only thing that really bothers me is where are the white athletes when this is happening?" he said backstage. Gordon won the award last season.

Dwane Casey was chosen Coach of the Year for his work with the Toronto Raptors, who fired him last month.

Lou Williams of the Los Angeles Clippers took Sixth Man honors.

Casey won over Quin Snyder of Utah and Brad Stevens of Boston. Usually, the knock on Harden was his defense, but in the switching scheme the Rockets employed all season he held his own.

Those facts were not lost on two-time MVP victor Stephen Curry, as he took to Instagram to wonder if the man who drafted those players for the Thunder, Sam Presti, was getting an MVP award too. A former NBA MVP and 12-time All-Star, Robertson averaged 25.7 points, 9.5 assists and 7.5 rebounds over 14 NBA seasons between the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks.
