United Nations honor guards carry a coffin containing the remains of the American soldiers after it was returned from North Korea at the border village of Panmunjom, South Korea.

But the city suddenly cancelled all preparations late Wednesday after being instructed by the government that "drills should be postponed for the time being following a change in the environment after the US-North Korea summit", he said.

Xi said China hopes North Korea and the USA can "implement well the outcomes achieved at the summit".

Friday's decision followed a high-level meeting between Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joe Dunford, and National Security Advisor John Bolton.

Critics have pointed to the vague wording of the non-binding summit document and raised fears that the summit could weaken the global coalition against the North's nuclear program.

United States President Donald Trump on Friday extended the sanctions on North Korea for a year, saying Pyongyang posed an "unusual and extraordinary" threat by its nuclear arsenal.

At their summit, Kim and Trump signed a pledge "to work towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", a stock phrase favored by Pyongyang that stopped short of longstanding U.S. demands for North Korea to give up its atomic arsenal in a "verifiable" and "irreversible" way. The official, who wasn't authorized to discuss the issue publicly and spoke only on condition of anonymity, would not answer questions about whether the site was already being destroyed, but said that as negotiations moved forward, the administration would continue to monitor the area where North Korea tested liquid propellant engines for long-range ballistic missiles.

Following North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's recent visit to China, Beijing plans to ease sanctions on Pyongyang in order to boost bilateral economic cooperation.

Repeating North Korean arguments, Trump said the games were "provocative" to Pyongyang and added that they were "very expensive". The drills help keep USA forces at a state of readiness in one of the world's most tense flashpoints. This would be his third visit to China, North Korea's main ally and key source of trade and economic assistance. "I wouldn't expect that at this point", he told reporters. Close to 7,700 USA troops remain unaccounted for from the Korean War, and about 5,300 of those were lost in North Korea. For now, Trump has maintained UN-led sanctions on North Korea, but China alone could dent the global pressure, as it is the North's biggest trading partner and supplier of food and energy.

"Again and again the US has been provoking a trade war".
