Trump defends 'zero-tolerance' policy towards immigration blames opposition Ivanka urged Trump to address family separation

The policy has so far separated more than 2,300 migrant children from their parents, in a chaotic process that places the children in shelters and with foster families across the country, while their parents remain detained.

Former president Barack Obama broke his silence on Wednesday - World Refugee Day - on immigrant families who have forced to be separated when entering the country at the southern border. Many professionals are anxious about what is happening to the more than 2,300 youngsters who have been separated from their parents by the Trump administration. Orrin Hatch of Utah, wrote the Trump administration asking it to pause the separation of immigrant families until Congress comes up with a solution.

Particularly worrisome, Republican operatives say, is that the images and sound of children in detention facilities could have a lasting impact with suburban women and drown out the economic-success message the party has been pushing.

But the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy, enacted by Attorney General Jeff Sessions 75 days ago, led to family separations as it states that everyone who tries to cross the border illegally would be criminally prosecuted.

Those arrested for crossing illegally are taken into U.S. Border Patrol custody and informed they will be charged with the crime.

A subsequent ruling in 2016 bars the government from keeping children in family detention centers for more than 20 days. Chinese social media users are scratching their heads over a "Chinese proverb" US President Donald Trump's daughter and advisor Ivanka posted to Twitter as her father prepared for his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un. "Otherwise it's never going to stop", he said.

The Trump administration is facing wave of criticism from popular GOP figures over its separation of families.

On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security said 2,342 children have been separated from their parents since last month.

Before departing for Minnesota, Trump signed an executive order to keep families together at the border.

President Donald Trump indicated he would take action shortly to both improve security on the border and help keep families together, speaking briefly with reporters Wednesday.

"I am calling for us to end the policy of separating families", Rauner said.

"The Republican leadership has been working on these other bills for a while. We added that over the weekend to this bill", Denham said.

A new CNN poll out Monday found that 67% of Americans oppose the separation of children from their parents, with 68% of independent voters disapproving of Trump's position.

The last-minute decision came at almost the same moment the House killed another more conservative immigration bill - also supported by Trump and GOP leaders - by a vote of 193-to-231.

Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen briefed lawmakers on Capitol Hill Wednesday, and those on the fence over pending immigration legislation headed to the White House to meet with Trump.

The issue struck an emotional chord, with accounts of children screaming and crying in facilities prepared for them. The delay came after some GOP lawmakers demanded more time to review the 299-page bill, which would dramatically revamp immigration policy.

In the Senate, meanwhile, Republicans are rallying behind narrow legislation that would allow detained families to stay together while expediting their deportation proceedings.

Current laws including the Flores Settlement, he argued, simply encouraged people to enter the country with their children, expecting to be caught and then released into United States society.

Gene Hamilton, a senior Justice Department official, said the executive order was a "stopgap" move and that Congress needs to pass new legislation to give the president more powers to fight illegal immigration.

It contains several of Trump's main priorities, including border wall funding, protecting young "Dreamer" immigrants who were brought to the country as children and curbs on legal immigration programs such as an end to the visa lottery.

Cruz's bill would double the number of federal immigration judges, authorize new temporary shelters to house migrant families and limit the processing of asylum cases to no more than 14 days - a goal immigrant advocates say would be hard to meet.
