"Its impact has expanded far beyond its day of observance", he said, adding that across nations, the day has become an occasion for initiations of millions of people inspired by the spirit of yoga, who commit themselves to its pursuit.

German nationals Thomas Pohl and his wife Kerstin Pohl were also part of the event. It has the best of our past and presents and a ray of hope for our future.

The emphasis on these postures and their sequences, such as the famous Sun Salutations, is a recent development, says India specialist Sita Reddy in "Yoga, The Art of Transformation" (2013).

The word yoga originates from Yuja, a Sanskrit word which means, "to join or to unite", symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

He noted that several modern medical institutes in the United States and in Europe have adopted yoga as an alternative treatment for many disorders.

As India struggles with the non-communicable diseases like diabetes and heart attacks which are on increase, Modi took the opportunity to highlight the health benefits of performing yoga. Baijal said that it was a matter of pride and privilege that yoga was being practised in 200 countries by crores of people.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is also on a tour to Europe, will lead the IYD celebrations at the European Parliament in Brussels. More than 500 officers, staff of the Rashtrapati Bhavan and their family members as well as residents of the President's Estate participated in the event.

The main event at Rajpath was attended by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and others.

Yoga might be India's greatest cultural export, but brand India itself is encouraging more yogapreneurs every year.

The fourth International Yoga Day was celebrated across all departments and colleges of the Delhi University, said a statement from the varsity.

Artist Sudarsan Pattnaik meanwhile created a special sand sculpture with the message "Yoga for Peace and Harmony" on a beach in the eastern city of Puri.

Prior to the celebrations marking International Yoga Day, the Muktinath temple in Nepal took Yoga to a higher level when monks, spiritual teachers and locals practiced Yoga Asansas at an elevation of 12500ft above sea level on June 17, 2018.

"Yoga has now become a vital holistic fitness regime for all", said Jaya Raman, a corporate executive base in Gurgaon.

Last year, PM Modi had led the yoga day celebrations in Lucknow.
