Colbert Dissects The ‘Not So Hidden’ Message Melania Trump’s Jacket Conveyed

Diane Mills | 23 June, 2018, 06:14

The green army jacket is created to look similar to the Zara version Trump wore on her recent visit to a Texas facility housing migrant children separated from their parents.

The photos of the first lady were snapped June 21, 2018, as she boarded a plane at Andrews Air Force Base in Prince George's County, Md.

White House spokesperson Stephanie Grisham said there was nothing symbolic about the jacket. When the first lady left Washington and returned, it was in the Zara jacket with the message heard 'round the interwebs scrawled graffiti-style in white block letters on the back. Rep. Dina Titus, a Nevada Democrat, taped a hand-drawn sign to her back reading "I care" and tweeted out a photo of herself next to one of Mrs. Trump boarding Thursday's plane to Texas with a personalized message: "Hey #FLOTUS, try this on for size". "After today's important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn't going to choose to focus on her wardrobe". Until that theoretical moment, we have the memes on one of the digisphere's most flawless blank canvases: Her green $39 jacket - one so five seasons ago, no less.

Melania and her husband are reported to be visiting the United Kingdom on 13 July, and are even expected to meet the Queen. Again, is that something you want your first lady to be telling you?

Oh oh oh I really don't care.

On Wednesday, the president said it was his wife and daughter Ivanka who had urged him to end the policy of separating parents who had tried to cross the U.S. southern border illegally from their children. But it wasn't long before the first lady's controversial jacket threatened to overshadow the entire goodwill junket to the border. Although the back of the coat was partly obscured in the photos, people online quickly identified it as a $39 Zara jacket emblazoned on back with the phrase: "I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?"

Visiting another classroom, Trump asked children where they were from and how long they'd been at the centre where staff said children typically spend between 42 and 45 days.

Because it was 80 degrees when Melania was wearing the jacket, and she kept it on right into The Oval Office, Melania was clearly intending to send a message.

Kimmel wondered whether Fox News would have a similar reaction to Melania's attire as they did when Michelle Obama dared to show her bare arms.
