Denmark's 1-1 draw with Australia earlier on Thursday means that Peru can not overhaul them in the Group C table, and sets up a showdown between France and the Scandanavians to see who tops the group.

Two changes for France from the side that beat Australia in their opening game with Giroud and Matuidi coming in for Dembele and Tolisso.

But no player is more important to Peru than striker Paolo Guerrero, who came off the bench against Denmark.

Guerrero, 34, is Peru's all-time top goalscorer but was cleared to play in the tournament only two weeks before it started, when he won a reprieve from a doping ban over a cocaine byproduct contained in a tea he drank.

From a sportsmanship perspective, at times his conduct left something to be desired, but with the only goal of the match, at 19 years of age, Mbappe becomes France's youngest goal scorer in World Cup finals.

Peru started at a fierce pace and nearly made a spectacular breakthrough after six minutes when Yoshimar Yotun saw France keeper Hugo Lloris off his line and his lob from around 50 yards dropped onto the top of the net.

But Guerrero's next contribution so almost put Peru ahead. A penalty scored by Antoine Griezmann and Australia own goal were the difference, but the performance was lackluster.

Nabil Fekir came on for the disappointing Griezmann and was immediately clattered by Aquino.

Energised by the tens of thousands of Peruvian fans, the South Americans tried to match Les Bleus' intensity early but were outshot 12-10 with only two of Peru's chances on target, with two others blocked. Both matches can be streamed on fuboTV (Try for free).

France will either be joined by Denmark or Australia in the next round.

France coach Didier Deschamps will include Olivier Giroud and Blaise Matuidi in his starting XI to face Peru on Thursday in Yekaterinburg.

Peru again showed why it is one of the most fun teams to watch at this year's World Cup, using creativity to open spaces for scoring opportunities.

Blaise Matuidi went into the book for a trip as Peru tried to counter before France conceded a free kick in a risky position on the left, only for Alberto Rodriguez to be adjudged to have pushed Samuel Umtiti as the delivery came in.
