French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have presented a united front against what they say are protectionist trade measures by Trump - particularly his decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

Trump made his comments before leaving the G7 summit in La Malbaie, Que. early Saturday - skipping an afternoon working group discussion on climate change, energy and protection the world's oceans - where trade issues have dominated the agenda due to a protectionist push by the Trump administration.

The US president has frosty relations with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the summit host.

The U.S. President Donald Trump was at odds with the other world leaders at the G7 Summit.

But even though he has made his criticism of globalization a major part of his appeal to voters, Trump was the main target of a protest by around 400 demonstrators on Thursday night who set fire to U.S. and other G7 flags.

"We will continue to demonstrate that we're interested in defending Canadian interests and, on top of that, it turns out I'm defending American interests because these tariffs they're putting forward are going to hurt American workers as well", Trudeau said Thursday. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not wait for the US president to kick off the meeting in La Malbaie, Quebec.

"The president will travel directly to Singapore from Canada in anticipation of his upcoming meeting with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un Tuesday".

The announcements come as Mr. Trump seeks to make headway on the deep US trade deficit, saying the country has been taken advantage of for too long, and he is fighting back. French President Emmanuel Macron gazed in surprise or bemusement as President Trump took his seat almost 20 minutes late to the affair.

"There will not be a sunset clause. we will not, can not sign a trade deal that expires automatically every five years", he told a news conference at the end of a Group of Seven summit in Quebec.

Just hours before Trump blew up the summit from afar after skipping out on its conclusion, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had proclaimed that all G7 countries, including the United States, had signed off on an "ambitious" communiqué.

President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe shakes hands during a news conference in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, June 7, 2018.

"Maybe the American president doesn't care about being isolated today, but we don't mind being six, if needs be", Macron told reporters.

He also made firm statements about Trump and trade, holding firm on his government's plan to retaliate against US steel and aluminum tariffs. He delivered that message personally during meetings with other leaders of the Group of Seven major economies, which took place in Canada on Friday and Saturday.

Mr Trump had earlier denied that the summit had been contentious, contradicting what one G7 official described as a bitter harangue between the US President and his counterparts over tariffs.

Trump is issuing a stern warning to foreign countries not to retaliate against United States tariffs on the imports of steel and aluminum.

"You go tariff-free, you go barrier-free, you go subsidy free", he said.

As The Guardian reports, the Comminique is actually "a joint statement [among all attending leaders] vowing to fight back against protectionism and pledging to follow established trade rules, in spite of clear differences between the U.S. and their counterparts in the global group". They have recovered somewhat, but are still vulnerable and Italy's new government is also a risk.

Trump also criticized his predecessor Barack Obama, saying he allowed Russian Federation to annex Crimea in 2014.
