Amazon to livestream Premier League in online shakeup

The e-commerce giant will show two full rounds of 20 soccer matches per season, starting in 2019 in a three-year deal.

The other 180 televised matches will be broadcast by Sky Sports and BT Sport, which have aired the Premier League in the past.

The Premier League broadcasting landscape was reshaped Thursday when Amazon became the first internet streaming service to buy live, domestic-only rights and clubs agreed they would no longer equally share all cash from overseas channels.

Amazon Prime have bought the United Kingdom package Premier Sports have acquired for the Irish market, in a move that will send shock waves through Sky and BT Sport, who have dominated the British Premier League television market in recent years. Viewers will be able to watch weekly highlights of all Premier League matches throughout the season, the press release said.

If prices remain as they are, it seems that the cheapest monthly cost of Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon Prime Video packages that cover all the live games will set you back £66.48 a month.

Package G, acquired by BT Sport, includes the rights to broadcast several fixtures from the split weekend, a new initiative that will create an opportunity for a mid-season player break.

Amazon is not the only tech company hungry for live sports. It broadcast the US Open tennis, ATP World Tour Tennis events and also National Football League games.

Now they're entering the world of association football, landing a package of Premier League games in the United Kingdom.

Today's announcement also confirms that BT Sport has won the rights for the same 52 Premier League games in the Republic of Ireland.

"Sky and BT are established Premier League partners and provide first-rate coverage of the competition through their live-match broadcasts and comprehensive programming".

The deal is an important milestone for Amazon, but it represents only a fraction of the larger Premier League pie.

Amazon just inked one of its biggest sports deals yet. In his annual letter to shareholders this year, Amazon's chief executive, Jeff Bezos, disclosed that 100 million people around the world had Prime subscriptions.

Analyst Paolo Pescatore at CCS Insight said the Premier League would be delighted to have secured a leading online giant as a partner, but it was a headache for fans who would need to sign up with another provider.

The Premier League is easing into doling out fixtures to streaming video.
