It's true: Teens are ditching Facebook

Teens are over Facebook Teens are over

Forty-five percent of teens say they are online "almost constantly", according to a new Pew Research Center study on teens and social media use.

In 2015, the survey showed that 71% of American teenagers between 13 years old and 17 years old used Facebook.

In the previous survey, websites like YouTube and Reddit weren't included as options.

The study also found that the kids belonging to low-income families tend to use Facebook more as compared to the kids of average or high-income families. This edition of the research found 95% of respondents own or have access to a smartphone, up from 73% when the research was conducted in 2014-15.

While Facebook may have lost its reign among the teenage demographic to Google-owned YouTube, it has owned the rising favourite Instagram, a photo and video-sharing networking service, since 2012. Instagram not only remains popular, it's slightly more popular than Snapchat. Twitter followed at 32 percent and Tumblr remained the same (14 percent) since the 2015 survey. Only about three-quarters of teens have access to a laptop or desktop in households earning less than $30,000.

The survey comes right after what is probably the most visible example of how teens use social media to date: the viral response to the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida. It also asked teens to state which social media websites they used and didn't use.

The study also probes the effect social media is having on America's youth, and finds almost a third (31%) see it as mostly positive, while almost a quarter (24%) see it as mostly negative. One of the platforms that are missing from the most recent survey is Vine. Another 44 percent report going online several times a day, while 11 percent say they use it even less often than that. Minorities of teens describe that effect as mostly positive (31 per cent) or mostly negative (24 per cent), but the largest share (45 per cent) says that effect has been neither positive nor negative.

Pew noted that the biggest change since its last teen survey, besides Facebook's fall from dominance, was just how ubiquitous smartphones have become among young people.
