Through RSVBee, spellers could qualify for the National Bee if did not win their state or regional bees but either won their school bee or had previously competed on the national stage.

The final leg of the bee started with 16 spellers and lasted more than two hours. The tension and relief on the faces of the other competitors, including Nicholas Lee, 14.

Karthik Nemmani, a soft-spoken eighth-grader from McKinney, Texas, hadn't been to the National Spelling Bee before, but he had already been in a battle with 12-year-old Naysa Modi.

The first-place prize this year includes $40,000 cash and an engraved trophy along with a trip to NY to appear on the ABC talk show Live With Kelly and Ryan.

Naysa's close friend, Jashun Paluru of West Lafayette, Indiana, finished fourth, spelling with flair and spending most of his time in between words chatting animatedly with Naysa. And third-place finisher Abhijay Kodali lives in Flower Mound, another 40 miles west.

"I got lucky", he said, acknowledging that there were eight or nine words during the final rounds that he didn't know.

The National Bee is a high-profile, high-pressure endurance test as much as a nerd spelling match and spellers spend months preparing for it.

Using the top searched "how to spell" words of each state, Google compiled a map that shows which words have given people the most pause in the US. They ranged in age from 11-14.

"I had confidence, but I didn't really think it would happen", Nemmani said moments after receiving his trophy at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in suburban Washington.

Aidan won the Treasure State title, which automatically qualified him for the national event, his second appearance there. So this year, Scripps Howard created an "invitational" category that added 238 additional spellers to the national competition, bringing the total to a record-setting 516. Contrast that to Nemmani's victory that was reported with regular headlines, such as this one in CNN: "Texas teen wins National Spelling Bee".
