Weinstein arrived at a NY police precinct in Manhattan, where he turned himself in.

The film producer Harvey Weinstein, who is accused by dozens of women of sexual assault, was charged Friday in NY for a rape and sexual assault, his first charge since the first allegations against him seven months ago.

Brafman said in the same court filing that he had been informed that Weinstein was a "principal target" of an investigation being conducted by the US attorney's office in Manhattan.

He was then charged with rape, a criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct for incidents involving two separate women.

President Donald Trump said he is "not familiar" with the Harvey Weinstein case when asked for his reaction to the former Hollywood producer being charged with rape and sex abuse Friday. Brafman also has said that Weinstein was a "principal target" of an investigation being conducted by the US attorney's office in Manhattan. Harvey Weinstein's lawyer said in a court filing that federal prosecutors in NY have launched a criminal investigation into the film producer, in addition to a previously disclosed probe by the Manhattan District Attorney.

There was no immediate public reaction from other stars who have spoken of being harassed by Weinstein, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd and Salma Hayek.

This is following a monthslong inquiry into those assault allegations.

Harvey Weinstein turns himself in to police at a station in Manhattan on Friday morning.

Weinstein handed off the books at the police station, where he was booked quickly.

Clad in a blue sweater and black suit jacket, Weinstein was shuffled past the hordes of paparazzi-a memorable scene in its parallels to the all too familiar scrutiny women have faced while walking past men on sidewalks around the world.

In an earlier time, both biographies would have been likely film projects for the disgraced movie mogul, who pleaded not guilty to charges he raped one woman and forced another to perform oral sex. She says Weinstein made unwanted advances toward her on two occasions in 1991, in NY and Los Angeles. Today we are one step closer to justice. Since Evans and others came forward, scores of women have shared their own stories of suffering sexual assault and harassment - stories that have implicated powerful men in Hollywood and beyond, from media and literature to politics and music.

His British fashion designer wife is divorcing him, his homes are being sold and he must now suffer the indignity of surrendering his passport and being fitted with a GBC monitor out on a $1 million cash bail.

"I said, over and over, 'I don't want to do this, stop, don't, ' " she told the magazine.

In addition to fighting the charges, Weinstein didn't seem to show much remorse over his actions - actions that include reportedly harassing over 70 women - in court on Friday.

Last year, investigative reporters detailed various sexual harassment claims against Harvey Weinstein, co-founder of The Weinstein Company. Al Franken, chef Mario Batali, casino magnate Steve Wynn and, most recently, Democratic New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
