Solo Stumbles With $103M Four-Day Memorial Day Opening Weekend

Solo, which cost Disney at least US$400 million to make and market worldwide, will collect about US$100 million over the entire Memorial Day weekend in North America, said comScore.

Even worse news for "Solo" was how badly it tallied overseas. The film, directed by Ron Howard, follows Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, who befriends his future co-pilot and Wookie companion Chewbacca, and meets the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover). Earlier in May, Variety released an article stating that, due to its extensive reshoots, Solo was considered the most expensive Star Wars film ever with a budget estimated to be upwards of $250 million.

An overdose of Star Wars series can also be considered to be a reason behind the disastrous box office collection made by Solo.

Disney's other big-ticket offering, Avengers: Infinity War, continued to be a draw in its fifth weekend where it earned $16.4 million from 3,768 theaters.

"Now what should have been either a victory lap after three-straight $1 billion-plus hits or an acceptable mulligan is going to only add to the "Egad, Star Wars is doomed" drumbeat", Mendelson said. It's no secret that the previous Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One, had some production problems that led Tony Gilroy (Bourne Legacy) restructuring the film and overseeing reshoots.

"Deadpool 2" should easily score the second slot, heading for a $42 million three-day sophomore frame and a four-day total of around $54 million.

If we were to carry over that trend, we could expect to see Solo: A Star Wars Story hopefully around late November or mid-December.

Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in "Solo: A Star Wars Story", an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy.

Fans were skeptical of Ehrenreich and uncertain about the dismissal of Lord and Miller (the popular filmmaking duo behind "21 Jump Street" and "The Lego Movie"). With so many Star Wars projects in the pipeline, the revived film franchise might already be heading toward if not a saturation point, at least the point where the films are no longer an event-type release.

"Solo" represents the lowest opening for a "Star Wars" film since Disney took over the franchise starting with 2015's "The Force Awakens".

That may sound like a lot, but it's a particularly disappointing outcome for a film set in the Star Wars universe.
