As of 5 p.m. Sunday, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said Alberto was moving north-northwest near the eastern Gulf of Mexico at 12 miles per hour and that the storm would approach the northern Gulf Coast by Sunday night or Monday.

"Locally heavy rainfall will be possible, but the pattern evolution is far from certain at this time", said the weather service's Albany office.

Little change in strength is forecast before Alberto reaches the northern Gulf Coast. Storm surge was a bigger threat north of the Tampa Bay area, with flooding possible in and north of Crystal River, the weather service said.

At 5am EDT Saturday morning, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was moving north-northeastward toward the Yucatan Channel and was centered about 95 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of Cozumel, Mexico. It is showing signs of transitioning to something more tropical as deeper convection has developed near the center.
