She started the race from the seventh position.

This year's Indy 500 was set to be the final race of Patrick's career. Ricciardo won Formula One's Monaco Grand Prix earlier Sunday.

He then fell behind Power, but passed up a chance to attack after the yellow for Sebastian Bourdais' crash.

"On lap 110, we were 13th and I wanted to be 15th, so we were a little ahead of schedule", Rossi said. "Thoughts went through my mind during the month". The final round of pit stops, starting with 28 laps remaining, was particularly tense, as every drop of fuel gathered or missed could have made the difference between winning and losing. Over the course of her career, Danica has raced in the Indianapolis 500 eight different times and she's finished in the top 10 during six of those occasions.

"When he first came here after unification [between IRL and Champ Car] he hated ovals, and now he loves 'em".

"I do feel like it was pretty unexpected, but on the other hand the vehicle was a little bit positive today and was turning a bit more than I wanted to", Patrick said.

"Whenever you talk about retiring to someone they are like what are you going to do next", Patrick told Reuters in an interview prior to the race.

"I just can't believe it", he said after the race.

Scott Dixon used strategy and stretched his fuel to finish third and was followed by Alexander Rossi, who drove from 32nd to fourth and made some of the most spectacular moves in the race. "I don't know if we have a tampering rule in IndyCar, but congrats Will". Rossi had no choice: It was hard to pass in the 2018 auto on a day that fell just 2 degrees short - it was 91 degrees - of being the hottest 500 in history.

With hot weather creating a slick, 2 ½-mile oval, new cars with less downforce proved to be handful.

Patrick was completing the "Danica Double" after wrecking out at the Daytona 500.

The 36-year-old retires as one of the most prominent women in the sport, even if she didn't always have the success on the track to equal her fame. It's both of them.

As she moves away from racing, Patrick has her Warrior clothing line, Somnium wine and her latest book Pretty Intense - a nutrition and fitness guide -to fill her time previously spent racing.

"I've had a lot of good fortune here and had some here this month". Bourdais crashed a year after missing the race because of a harrowing, high-speed accident during qualifying, while Castroneves - who is now driving sports cars for Penske - was going for a record-tying fourth victory in the Indy 500 in a brief return to open-wheel racing.

Before leaving the Brickyard that had been the stage for many of her career highlights, Patrick fulfilled one final obligation sucking up her disappointment for a meeting with the media she so often had a love-hate relationship with.
