First named storm of Atlantic Hurricane Season has formed

Tropical depression formation expected Saturday First named storm of Atlantic Hurricane Season has formed

"Alberto is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 10 to 15 inches with isolated totals of 25 inches across the northeastern portions of the Yucatan Peninsula and western Cuba", the National Hurricane Center said. Alberto is expected to make landfall as a strong tropical or subtropical storm anywhere from the Florida Panhandle to the Louisiana Gulf Coast.

It's now a 40-mph storm located about 60 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico, according to the hurricane center's 2 p.m. Friday update.

If the storm organizes into a closed low with winds less than 39 miles per hour, it will likely become our first tropical depression of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

The difference between a "subtropical' and "tropical storm" is just a structural one that scientists used to distinguish the storms".

Alberto is not a fully tropical system, with most of its worst weather on its eastern side.

Alberto marks the first named storm of the 2018 Atlantic season.

Subtropical Storm Alberto has formed over the northwestern Caribbean Sea.

An event in South Florida was canceled as a result of the expected rain, as well. Kennedy said the farther east the storm tracks, the more impacts for Marion and Alachua counties. A storm surge watch was issued for the coast from from Horseshoe Beach in Florida's Big Bend west to the mouth of the Mississippi River.

Original story: The National Hurricane Center has increased the chances that a tropical system will develop in the Gulf of Mexico to 90 percent over five days as an area of storminess southeast of the Yucatan Peninsula becomes better organized.

The tropical threat comes earlier than usual.

Typically water temperatures need to be at least 80 degrees for a tropical storm to form.

Forecasters from AccuWeather believe the depression could make landfall in the U.S. by Memorial Day, potentially ruining the holiday weekend for millions of Americans.

About four to six inches are expected for the greater Fort Lauderdale and Miami areas, with three to four inches expected for Palm Beach County.

It will continue to move north going into Sunday and Monday and will dump heavy rain all along the coast.
